phish’s cover of ‘in the aeroplane over the sea’ from MPP last summer is one of the best covers that they’ve ever pulled off in terms of both selection and execution. trey’s voice sometimes sounds awful on covers and it strangely fits this one like a glove.
that’s a really interesting strong opinion. unfortunately, i was there but stuck outside at the box office because the ticketfly network broke down and no one could claim their will calls.
i agree, i liked it a lot, and its a great brave choice for them. although the majority opinion i’ve seen since was that page shoulda sang it.
i’m fine with trey, personally i like his voice overall because its so naturally him, not trying to sound like anyone or dress it up somehow… but i can’t help but be intrigued what page woulda sounded like.

page’s vocal stylings are definitely more suited to the melody of the song, but the way trey sang it was perfect. he didn’t try to emulate jeff mangum or try to hard to nail the extended notes at the end of the verses. page’s piano playing in the cover is great as well. just an awesome, awesome cover. this and ‘night nurse’ were the best covers of 2010, which is saying a lot because they played a huge range of cover songs that year.
i agree about the point about trey’s vocal take… and that kinda wins me over. not that page would tried to sound like Mangum, but his voice usually carries a slight soul/r&b touch to it…

“Goochy” is a fantastic name because its sounds like “Gucci” which is funny in itself, but it looks more like “Coochie” the way The 2 Live Crew used to rock it…

^Love everything about that WHOLE album. Not many do for some reason . I would love to hear Phish play “Shine” or “Air Said To Me”. Trey has dropped the latter altogether

^It’s a great album of songs, but it kind of messes with my head how radio friendly it sounds in most places. I’m with you on Phish playing those two selections though.
You guys ever laugh when you listen to Phish? Sometimes the music is so good that it makes me laugh. Like this Bowie, just when I think Trey can’t get any more dissonant he finds a way to and then when that tension settles my reaction is laughter. Also with this Hood, between 2:50 at 3:07 makes me laugh. Trey is flying all over the fretboard and at 3:04 machine guns through an entire scale for Trey reasons.
