I laugh pretty frequently when I’m listening to them. Just recently I was running the 10/30/10 show and got to the point where they’re playing the excerpt from “Whole Lotta Love” and it was just so awesome I had to laugh a little bit. This band still gets me.
^You listen to a lot of really great music, Dan. Are there performances by other bands that you can say the same thing about?
For me, there are performances by other bands that continue to astound me, but from a consistency standpoint, no band does it to me more than Phish. It’s quite an addiction I have, it is.
My criteria for personal, emotional, and financial investment into a band is 1. They make me laugh. 2.They can make my eyes roll back in my head. When you add 1 + 2 it equals Free!!!
This probably sums it up pretty well for me too. That’s a very good question though. But for other bands, let’s see… of course there are countless Dead shows I can say that about. It also depends if we are talking about specific performances or just the band/artist in general. If it’s specific performances, I may only be able to relate Phish and the Dead on that level because I download more of their shows than anyone else.
But there are without a doubt other artist that can astonish me on a comparative level to Phish, it’s just harder to judge strictly by their live recordings because I don’t analyze it the same way as Phish, nor do I have as many shows by any artist than Phish. Of course I could give you a list of some of the music that does amaze me like Phish, but I don’t think that was what yer askin about…
Good topic. For me, besides Phish (they are hands down the most band out there), Rush is that way live for me. They take me to some pretty special places also. Bruce Hornsby is that way for me too sometimes. It really depends on mood. Seeing Yes about 15 years ago really changed my life musically, as well.
Umphrey’s McGee makes me because just when I think a solo or jam can’t peak any higher they blast the roof off. Great shows, but still they don’t take me to the level Phish does, and I think it’s because there’s far less give and take between the band and the crowd. From the shows I’ve seen, UM is pretty much gonna play the same show regardless of how much dancing there is.
As for Phish, the Halloween Jibboo actually made tears well up in my eyes. Also, in the 12/1/95 Mike’s, just before the Weekapaug segue Fishman plays this fill and Trey comes in with this SICK lead and that continually makes me . Also, the first time I “got” Remain in Light was pretty emotional too but there were some drugs involved. Like fone said up there, from a consistency standpoint, no band does it to me more than Phish.
I definitely get this at shows. The last time it happened was the Alpine DWD -> WTU. When they dropped seamlessly into WTU it was like a victory lap for a really nice jam. I was verklempt.
