Religion isn’t bad, it’s the loud-voiced people that annoy me.
I didn’t notice the metamorphosis of Dennis Miller when he did Monday Night Football. Years later (3 years ago) I became aware that he is now an agendized pundit on a.m. radio. I guess hind-sight is 20/20 when tracing back how someone got converted to the Dark Side. What did the the elephant bribe that boy with?
Religulous is Gr8! It goes well with “Jesus Camp”. I got to see that one the day before Haggard got “outed”. Priceless timing. His cameos in the movie take this mildly psychotic look at Colorado evangelical families and personality programming in the under 18 cohort, into a Holy Shit! Free for all, Rip-Snort’n Good Time!
Great post Glenn. I agree with a whole lot of that stuff. We should like, hang out together. Maybe speak in tongues & go door to door with those little pamphlets. I forget what they’re called. Or we could jam. I’ll be right over. ::searches for scuba gear or VW Jetta > motor boat conversion kit::
I bent my wookiee
This thing? Do you mean you bent him at the joints, or that you achieved the impossible and turned action-figure-Chewie’s head?

Mr. Tolerance, not so tolerant of everyone, huh?
And speaking of tolerance, I thought Religulous was abrasive, crude, and offensive, and I’m not even religious. It’s funny how people who push the acceptance agenda are so quick to talk shit on religion.
Very true Ship…I also dislike it when people who happen to believe in God (which has been made to seem like a WEIRD thing
) are stereotyped as “Jesus freaks” or whatever. There is such a thing as just believing in God. I mean, the big old school buses that take kids to Bible study camp (hmmm seems I see these buses at some other summer activity I frequent
) definitely exist. However, “Jesus Freaks” represent a very small percentage of “religious” people. Myself, I am Irish (Roman) Catholic and pretty proud of it. I make it to Mass maybe once a month, but with my profession I am at church 2 or 3 times a WEEK! I dig the idea of going to Heaven…I want some wings though damnit! Really hope I can fly up there.
but with my profession I am at church 2 or 3 times a WEEK!
This is my excuse for not going to Mass on the weekends (unless it happens to be one of those dang Saturdays
)

^Oh man…soooo many hung over Saturday Fu$#@!ls
Oy.
Look, you guys should know me well enough by now to know I’m not 100% tolerant of everything and anything under the sun. Murder, for instance, bothers me. Rape. Bigotry. Things such as that. And I can be closed minded to things I disagree with for sure.
You wanna believe in Jesus? All the power to you. Seriously. I hope it all works out. Buddha? Moses? Allah? Zeuhl… no problem. I say pray your ass of and may you experience a million miracles.
As long as you’re not pushing your religion on me or asking me to change my laws to suit your bible and you’re not out raping, stealing and killing in the name of your god, we’re good.
Fair enough?
Don’t believe anyone didn’t understand your point dooj. It was one that practically everyone here agrees with you on. But in your haste to make that point, your message reeked of intolerance for the great people around the country who find solace in a structured social organization designed, at least in spirit to find spirituality and comfort in the same way. The joy that our brothers and sisters recieve from their belief systems should be honored and not mocked and grouped with the corruptors among them. That’s akin to racism in it’s rational construct, and we all knew you’re way more intelligent than that.
Although it’s not rape, extortion or murder, I’ve seen some genuine hate thrown around in the name of Phish, in much the same way you generalized about all people who follow a religion. Can’t tell me there isn’t some primal similarities in what we receive from basking in a few stupid notes of Fluffhead, and what others do in the same way by singing a hymn or praising an idea of an ultimate greater good, a superior essence of love. Yeah, its’ all illusion, and the wise man knows it. But the wiser man knows it serves a purpose, and that these belief systems probably save a lot more lives and rapes and thefts because they keep the majority of us mindful of who we are together.
My Notification sound on my phone is now Hank Hill saying “what?”
You wanna believe in Jesus? All the power to you. Seriously. I hope it all works out. Buddha? Moses? Allah? Zeuhl

how about cthulhu?

If religion is the opiate for the masses. Then why not just give opiates to the masses?
Or the other unpopular opinion. Methadone. The perfect compliment to the wellfare state! I’ll be taking the flames in my other thread titled " I really could care less and try not to waste time on religion".
Fone, your post is right on, sir. I was just kinda “typing my thoughts” and not really clarifying them, but I agree with your assessment.
I guess I don’t think as much about offending religious people because I came from it and so did my wife… so it’s kind of like a black person being able to talk smack about blacks, ya know nigga?

My wife was raised in a very religious christian household and I was raised in a moderately religious jewish household but somehow those upbringings convinced us both that agnosticism was the way to go. And I love my parents to death. I just think they’re crazy when it comes to some of the jew stuff. ![]()
But it’s that crazy shit that keeps them from flying off into the sun, something they really shouldn’t have any fear of. It’s unfortunate that they do have that fear, but I can’t fault anyone from doing the harmless yet crazy things they must do to deal with them.
Besides, I have a whole family that believes I’m certifiable for wanting to see Phish three nights in a row in October. But having that, and this here OKP, make my work life a helluva lot easier to deal with, and even though Marie doesn’t truly understand how that works for me, she’s one of the few who understands my need for that crazy shit.
Yes…leading a somewhat “fanatical” lifestyle in which we base our lives on music(mainly Phish) is quite similar to religious enthusiasts. As stated many times before, Phish is a lifesttyle–not just a band. I think that is something most of us can agree on!
You know…I was just looking at the Facebook group that I set up for us back in the day and we’ve actually got a lot of members on there. That’s not really unusual…there are like 1000 members on this site, or something like that last time I checked, but what I did find unusual was the disproportionate amount of women in our OKP Facebook group. Like, tehre are a lot of them, and I don’t even know most of them.
So anywho…I propose we move this party over to the Facebook and I’ll bring the flunitrazepam. ![]()
Speaking of partying…I won’t be doing any of that tonight, but I do have a few beers here that I forgot in the freezer the other night and now that they are thawed out, are they still good to drink? I noticed the one I’m drinking seems to be lacking the majority of its fizz…is that normal? Do you think I froze all the alcohol out or will they still give me a buzz?
Oh, and on the topic of religion…yeah, I’m with you Dooj, religion sucks. Sorry if that sounds intolerant, but choosing a religion is not like being a woman or a black person or a gay person…it’s a choice. It’s like saying taht if you say the KKK sucks then you must be intolerent. NO…the issue is taht religions and stupid groups like the KKK are intolerant…or at least certain members of those groups are…and that’s why they suck. Sorry for the rant…maybe this beer is still good.
Here’s another thought 4 ya.
My great aunt Loretta passed away Wednesday evening. I was never that close to her. Met her a couple of times, but she seemed like a great lady, and for sure she will be missed. It actually said in her obit that she used to host a TV show back in the early '60’s, so that’s pretty cool.
Anyway, the funeral is tomorrow at 11 AM. None of my immediate family is going except my grandma, probably because all my other family on my mom’s side lives out of town. So,I should probably go right? Here’s the kicker though…Broomfield tickets go on sale at 12. Those are the only shows that I can potentially hit this fall/this year, and it’s not gonna happen if I’m not home trying to get tickets.
