So, there’s an interesting dynamic in my generation here in the South. I have observed this over the past two or three years, and I don’t quite know what to make of it. You have these country boys, from towns that are just little specks on the map, just an intersection with a gas station and a grocery store. These boys have quotes like, “I don’t walk when I can ride, and I don’t ride without my Copenhagen” and “Cussing me won’t save you no time, hoss” on their Facebook pages, which leads one to think they would be into country music and a more rural lifestyle and the whole bit. BUT:
These guys often list as their favorite music people like Phish, Bob Dylan, The Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and tons of other great artists. Now, there are still some who are into awful country music (there is such a thing as good country music, you know), but I have seen a huge number of them who are big fans of the type of music I described. I just wonder how and why this came to be. I find it interesting.
An interesting aside: I looked up “country music” on Wikipedia, and one of the most surprising things in the article is that it said that country music is popular in the Southern United States and in the Canadian Maritimes! Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, that is. Who woulda thought?
