Type your thoughts (Part 1)

So, there’s an interesting dynamic in my generation here in the South. I have observed this over the past two or three years, and I don’t quite know what to make of it. You have these country boys, from towns that are just little specks on the map, just an intersection with a gas station and a grocery store. These boys have quotes like, “I don’t walk when I can ride, and I don’t ride without my Copenhagen” and “Cussing me won’t save you no time, hoss” on their Facebook pages, which leads one to think they would be into country music and a more rural lifestyle and the whole bit. BUT:

These guys often list as their favorite music people like Phish, Bob Dylan, The Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and tons of other great artists. Now, there are still some who are into awful country music (there is such a thing as good country music, you know), but I have seen a huge number of them who are big fans of the type of music I described. I just wonder how and why this came to be. I find it interesting.

An interesting aside: I looked up “country music” on Wikipedia, and one of the most surprising things in the article is that it said that country music is popular in the Southern United States and in the Canadian Maritimes! Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, that is. Who woulda thought?

My friends band just released a new album and you can download it for free right here. http://noiseorg.com/ check em out, you guys may like em.

Yeah, so I won like 400 bucks and change bettin on the Ponies this weekend. Go Animal Kingdom!

right on dude! i had actually picked AK but not as a bet… oh wellz

Morning Pa,
so, i am out of money…out of booze, out of reefer…out of all the enablers, with only two smokes left. I think my time has come to put down the cigs and move on.

Yeah, I find this interesting as well. Now, I’m a Southern girl myself. I do like whiskey in my water and sugar in my tea. I also like good tunes. I also like Outlaw Country (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, etc…) I’m also friends with many people on Facebook just as you described, Edward. Good ol’ boys from Southern Alabama who choose to “check-in” to places such as “Hot Shots” and (Dare I say . . .) “The Mullet Toss @ Flora-Bama with Katie Jill and Mary Beth”. Yet their favorite bands are some of my favorite bands? My next question concerns the pictures and wardrobe. Okay, Billie Ray, you live in BFE South Alabama. You do not need to wear boat shoes while driving your tractor. You also don’t need to pair it with mountain wear/gear and a visor. (The North Face, Patagonia, Columbia, etc . . .) You do not live in a mountainous area, and furthermore, the area where you do live does not battle any sort of elements, let alone freezing temperatures. It’s all a bit odd to me, and all the pieces of the puzzle just don’t seem to fit.

This doesn’t surprise me too much. There’s a lot of jam elements to country music. And a pretty eclectic selection of instruments. If you’re into real country-- not just the keith urban pop crap-- it usually involves an appreciation for soloing skills and vocal harmonies. And, when it comes to dylan… well, I don’t think there’s a genre that exists that doesn’t owe at least a song or two to dylan. There’s actually a country tribute to dylan that’s worth a listen.

I think that the sun will die out before the moon. Jus sayin…

I think that humans will kill the earth (or at least all the life on it) before the sun dies out.

:wtf:

“Pizza Is My Life!”

??    a?

Country music is huge here in the Canadian prairies too. One of the largest country music festivals in the world is held annually about 20 minutes outside of Regina. The people that go there make me want to vomit with rage, but it’s nice that the city always empties out for a weekend. Some people go so far as to camp out there two weeks ahead of time, just getting drunk on the side of the road and listening to loud country music. By the time that weekend is over they always just decimate this poor little Saskatchewan valley town. I’ve never gone, but I’ve gotten some trouble from the law because of that event before.

I do love country music mind you, but not the shit they consider to be country nowadays. I honestly feel that country music hit a peak with Gram Parsons that it will probably never reach again, but I do love me some Merle and Willie and Johnny and Emmylou and Waylon and many others who made that real working mans country music. From a purely artistic perspective though, Gram was the shit. He was it. Every note he sang just makes my soul bleed with whiskey drenched sorrow. RIP you grevious angel.

Some days while walking around, I see little worms dancing on the ground. Other days, I do not. Does this mean they have to charge their i pods too?

:problem:

So the deal on our house fell through. We bent over fucking backwards for these people to reach a deal (even agreed to put a new roof on the house) and they just said they ‘didn’t feel comfortable with all the pressure.’ Wtf…I was so pissed yesterday. Slightly less angry today but still unhappy about the whole thing. Fuckers.

 That sucks that they pulled the rug out from under you like that. Really tied the room together too.

It really did, I agree…

Well, at least they didn’t steal the bowl of brussel sprouts you had sitting on your little rolling cart thingy!

But, hang in there Doug… it’s gonna happen!

Nice post Devin, yeah, the article mentioned the prairie provinces as well, but to a much lesser extent. I am not terribly surprised by the prairie provinces being big on it, but the Maritimes, I though that was weird. Shows what I know though. And I totally agree, like I mentioned in my first post, there is good country music out there. Plenty of it. It’s just not being made anymore is the problem. Or, well, they’re still making good bluegrass and there are a few good country acts left, but it’s fading to shit quickly.

Get this shit, I read it on the Weather Channel website:

What the fuck?!?!?! We’ve got .75 billion airline passengers and only 4,000 airplanes?!

Hmnmm, just for fun… 4,000 planes - if you average 150 ppl per plane, that is 600,000 people with 4,000 planes in the air…

Lets say that 3/4’s of the planes run everyday… 3000 planes @ 450,000 ppl x 365 days? 164,250,000 people with only 3/4’s of the planes running once a day… I think if you extrapolate this out further, it might make more sense??

I dunno, but that was fun…
