I just read this article about fans of the KC Chiefs cheering because (I believe it was their own quarterback?) got a head injury and had to leave the game. Pretty fucking sick, and not the good kind of sick.
Oh yeah, and Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman split after 30 years together!
^Eh, it’s sports. I don’t get why people get so worked up over fans cheering or booing during this stuff. I wouldn’t do it but it’s fandom. These guys need to realize they’re entertainment to us. Dance for me, football players! Dance!
Of course, I’d imagine they wouldn’t have cheered so much had it hit them that Brady Quinn was the backup.
And I don’t know why fans get so worked up over a game, they would celebrate a potentially serious injury. Does liking sports strip you of humanity? Or maybe liking both sports and alcohol.
Agree, and yeah, drunk sports fans are one of the worst kinds of humans. Really, drunk anything fans are just the worst kind of humans. When you’re at a show and you’ve got a section full of talkers/people who yell during quiet composed parts, I’d lay big odds that those people are drunk. Friggin’ obnoxious.
EDIT: Actually, yeah, drunk sports fans are worse. Because it’s just a fucking game, dude.
I’m certainly not condoning the actions of any drunken anybodies…but I think some people get just as fired up about sports as Phish fans do about Phish shows for the same reasons. It evokes passion, emotion, and and an appreciation of human talent/creativity. I’d bet there are die-hard sports fans out there that would say “it’s just a fucking concert, dude”. I say this because, while I’m a tad more passionate about Phish than sports, I get it. In short: most excessively drunk people are just plain fucking obnoxious regardless of the scenario.
Yeah, you’re right Doug. I get a little irritated with hardcore sports fans this time of year is all, being that I live in Alabama and all. You can only hear about how great Nick Saban is so many times before you eventually start to wish the bastard would get lost in the woods some afternoon and take until Spring to find his way back. I’m a sports fan myself, just not a super hardcore one is all. Plus I’m an Auburn fan (living in Crimson Tide territory), and well, we’re horrible this year. Obnoxious drunk people suck, that’s basically the moral of the story.
Is there a time of year when people aren’t going nuts over sports? Which one is it right now? Guys playing with the round orange ball, the oval brown ball or the little white ball? Am I missing one? The black and white checkered ball?
For one, most people don’t exactly see it as “serious” injury. Concussions happen in football all the time…I know it can be dangerous but you really do see them every week. For two, most of us do see it as just entertainment like a TV show or something else. I don’t see the point at booing your own team but these folks pay a lot of cash to go to these games and then see their QB suck game after game so they get frustrated…it’s like Doug says…emotions run really high when you’re at these games…it’s like a show where it’s one of the few places you can kind of “let yourself go” and it’s kind of accepted. I’m sure the alcohol helps.
We’re into one of those periods where it’s almost everything at once. College and pro football in full swing, baseball playoffs on every night, hockey WOULD be starting up but it’s on strike and the NBA preseason games are just starting. It’s a good time for sports.
Yeah Alabama is seriously intense about their college football. When we were down there for the Oak Mtn show I felt like we weren’t going to be allowed to leave the state until we chose either Roll Tide or War Eagle.
It’s a religion in Alabama…and most southeastern states, but I’d say there are no other fans like old, U of Alabama football fans
I’d also say it’s hard to think much of someone’s opinion about sports, especially SEC football, if you haven’t experienced any/much of it…NFL and other pro sports, it’s harder for me to understand, being older I don’t understand the psyche of the hardcore sports fan in general, but it’s a community, we people like a sense of belonging
But, really, if you had to choose, I hope you chose wisely and went with orange and blue.
I’m going to see Leftover Salmon tonight. My thoughts: I haven’t seen these guys in years, and even then it was only one time, and I don’t remember it at all because it was a long time ago and I think I was fucked up at the show and stuff. So I’m going into this one totally blind, which is a good thing usually. Hope the show is good. I’m sure any band that has ever had Noam Pikelny in it can’t be anything less than great. Right?
^Another board I’m on, that has folks with some high standards for live music, had nothing but great things to say about last night’s show in Asheville…a couple said it was the most fun they’ve had at a show in a long time
not very familiar with their music, but I wish I could’ve caught one of their shows along this run…but they’ve been like all weekday shows…have fun Edward
^What a wild stories…some of these dogs just think they’re invincible…maybe it’s the “pack mentality” with them. Of course the bulls were taking any crap.
As for the lady, I have a feeling she’s used to her dogs going crazy…that’s probably why she didn’t even bother with them…I’ll bet they’ve run off so many times that they know their own way back. Some folks just have these outdoor animals that they kind of “half own” them…there’s a lot of that with cats in Florida…folks leave them outside all day and you see them sleeping on the owner’s driveway and under their car.
