Thanks for the computer advice. I’m off for the week, so I’ll try some of the suggestions and see what happens.
It’s really weird to me that there’s all this news about NFL players not wanting to play with gay dudes, but they don’t seem to have a problem playing with criminals. Google Ray Rice for recent example. Such a fucked up society we live in.
^Because the Bible is all about forgiving criminals and all about telling folks being gay is a sin. Dumb people who can’t think for themselves (yes, many athletes are fucking dumb) are told this and they believe it. I’m not here saying religion is bad but this is all on religion.
The worst part is they always say how they’ll be uncomfortable while showering with these guys and all that. It’s a silly comment since these guys are basically saying “Well clearly I’m SO hot that no one will be able to resist me so this gay guy will CLEARLY be checking me out 24/7.” or “Clearly gay guys have no off-switch so they’ll obviously be looking at hogie all day long.” They also never seem to care that attractive women have to deal with guys checking them out all day, every day and they somehow survive but this athlete can’t handle it happening ever. So many things wrong with the logic but then again we all know that logic has nothing to do with any anti-gay sentiments.
^Thats what’s so stupid. These dudes are so clueless as to how privledged they are to play professional sports, and they look for reasons to f it up and/or cause controversy. I think most would agree, that if someone said, “ok, you can play in the NFL or whatever, make millions of dollars, but while you shower, someone will be checking out your package,” you would jump at the opportunity.
My 12 year old said yesterday, “Whatchu talkin’ bout Willis?”
I was all, put that phrase back where you found it!! How could you know about that??
Seriously, how does anyone not from the 80s know anything about Will Drummand?
^It blows me away when any kid knows something about anything that didn’t come out in the last 5 years. Heck, I’m shocked that they know anything from the 90s, let alone anything before then. Even worse it scares me that kids look back at old 90’s bands and think that was like the pinnacle of music.
^^How does he know that line? Did some Disney or Nickelodeon show bring it back? Is nothing sacred?
^^^ I’d be really afraid if he said “where’s the beef?”
I don’t know who that is, but I know the line. Just one of those things that get passed around, other kids say at school etc…

That’s amazing, that the line endured and I didn’t even know it. But it makes me feel old, because I’m sorta used to being on the other end, having a saying’s origin explained to me.
I’ve heard kids say it but I assumed they were watching Different Strokes episodes on Nick-at-Night or something. Or do they even do that anymore? Or was I the only kid that watched 60’s-70’s reruns on Nick-at-Night growing up?
Nih Nih Nih Nih, Ni-Nih Nih Nih’k. Nicolodeaoooooooooon. (I totally watched Nick at Nite)
^Same here. Shows from the 50s even. Father Knows Best, Dick Van Dyke Show, Green Acres, Patty Duke. Do they still do Nick at Nite though? I remember the TV Land channel started out basically as a 24 hour Nick at Nite, but I know they have a lot of original programming now.
I wish everyone knew Roseanne references. I know that line though, 23.
Lemme ask you guys something? Y’all saving for retirement?
I just came back from the bank. This is probably the fourth year in a row that I’ve put away some significant amount in an RRSP (kind of like a 401K I think, in that there are significant tax benefits for doing so), but I still feel like no matter how much I put away, with inflation and these soft markets, no matter what I do I can not find a way to have enough money to retire, basically ever. This is kind of a tough subject to bring up when different countries have such different policies towards saving for retirement, but it’s something that always starts to play on my mind this time of year, and I’d just be curious how you guys/gals are doing in terms of saving for some point in your life where you’ll never HAVE TO work again.
I guess I have to look at it like I’m also buying a house which is a type of investment, which I would also like to turn into an income property at some point in the not too distant future and maybe toying a bit more with real estate once I do have some equity built up.
sorry…not the most exciting topic of conversation, but it counts as “my thoughts”
Not quite the same here. I can tell you anecdotally the national pension doesn’t cut it.
Marie and I live a less than average ‘middle class’ life here and it costs us about 6K a month to do so. That’s right down to the cat food. If we start collecting social security at full retirement age, which we both can at the moment, we’ll get checks totaling about 4K a month, before taxes, probably about 3.4K after.
If we didn’t have my 20+ years of contribution into a 401K and a couple of small private pensions, with the added cost of health care that’s in the works, we would have had to move in with one of the kids in order to maintain anywhere close to our lifestyle.
But I kind of agree with Glenn on his ‘shit hitting the fan’ scenario. I also worry about the value of these “paper holdings” when the economic systems fail. Have thought about purchasing a small tract of arable land in north or south Carolina as a hedge against some kind of collapse. But I’m not a doomsday-reactive type of person, just a mild mannered saver of pennies here and there.
Lemme ask you guys something? Y’all saving for retirement?
Yup. I’m cheap and I’m careful. I have three roth IRAs going and a few 401Ks that I only got involved in because they have matching (to me, the ONLY reason to do a 401K is if they have matching)…I’ve been slacking since I still haven’t moved the money out of the 401K of my last job. I don’t depend on any pension because they don’t exist anymore and I’m not expecting anything from the government (though if I get it, it’ll be a nice bonus).
I also do an income statement on myself. That’s right…I save all my receipts, try to record every expense I have, and I put them in proper categories (rent, groceries, entertainment, etc) and then I can compare previous years to current ones. It’s hard to set up at the start (I just used a spreadsheet) but it’s easy to maintain once you get going. Yes, I’m an accountant but you’d be surprised at how much you can learn if you actually do this. I can even provide my income statement template if someone wants it. There’s a few great books on money management and debt (Dave Ramsey does some great ones) so those can help with simple methods on how to take care of things.
I also have zero debt because I detest debt and I hate this mindset that has been pushed on people that debt is a normal part of life. I lived pretty damn cheaply after school (and missed all of 2.0) as I used a majority of my paychecks to pay off all that debt. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to bring myself to buy a house because I just won’t want to deal with the mortgage. I just don’t buy the “buy a house as an investment” thing…you buy a house to have someplace to live but I would never want to count on my house earning money…there’s just too many outside factors that can kill your house’s value…to depend on all of these factors that are completely out of your control is a bit flawed. Buy a house if you want to live there; not if you want it to make you money.
Pensions and investments might be worth absolutely nothing by then… who knows.
Greatly disagree. Investments are the easiest way to make money. If you just keep your cash in even a conservative mutual fund, that’s essentially free money. No reason to have that sit in a bank account (especially since bank interest is an absolute joke now). And for goodness sake, don’t panic and sell if it starts to drop…that’s easily the dumbest thing someone can do. That was one of the biggest myths of the big stock crash of a few years ago. They had stories of how people “lost” billions of dollars…but that’s all on paper…you only lose money if you sell your shares. I held onto mine and they eventually worked themselves back up to where they were and I didn’t lose a dime because I didn’t panic. Your investments you can earn up to 8,9, or 10% return on investments. You don’t have to be that smart…just be patient.
All I know is I want as far away from society by the time shit hits the fan… that’s my retirement plan.
Eh, nothing’s hitting the fan. Government’s a mess but they’re not the be-all, end-all. Businesses run this country anyway and they’re doing fine.
Gotta love getting 3 players to drop softball tryouts after the “tough girl” softball lecture (a former player getting 3 teeth knocked out)…only a few more to go.
^Good work Keith, can’t have any softies on the softball team…I know the name of the game is quite misleading- especially if you’re coaching fastpitch (is slowpitch softball still a thing for young girls?)
Does anyone on here snowboard? Got any guidance for someone looking to get into it? I know it’s kinda late in the season, but I still wanna give it a shot…I never enjoyed skiing and wasn’t very good at it (but I was pretty young when I first gave it a shot), but I always wanted to try snowboarding cause I was always more comfortable on a wake board than water skis and I skateboarded a lot growing up
Figured I’d just rent at least once before I go jumping to conclusions of buying a board, but there are some pretty cheap deals on craigslist that make it seem worth going ahead and buying one
