I’m a little pissed off I didn’t get the Phish Update email until this morning…
I totally missed the streaming of Murat '93.
I’m not going to argue with you on most of what you’ve said (actually no one can argue with another person’s likes and dislikes especially when it comes to art), but, even though I’m not as gaga over Dylan as most of my generation is or was, I might have to take exception to the ‘better lyrics’ part of your statement.
I’m not quite sure anyone has come close to Dylan’s poetry and the social and cultural impacts it’s had upon rock and folk music. Paul Simon is no slouch either, but I don’t find his lyrics as generically universal as so much of Dylan’s early work was.
That being said, I wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your observation, although I wouldn’t necessarily give Garfunkel too much of the credit except possibly for the harmonies. Having seen both of them in solo concerts over the past few years, it was very easy to realize that Paul Simon was the musical force behind Simon and Garfunkel.
btw, my number 3 all time best concert experience was seeing Simon and Garfunkel in the Winter of 1967-8 in a small college gymnasium. It was them, Simon’s guitar, and three mics, but the sound that filled that room is still memorable to me after 40 years. Their sound was so much more impressive than the two Dylan concerts I saw, one of which was in the very same gym.
i just had instant mashed potatos.
i liked them.
my dog licked the bowl.
she liked them too.

I felt the same way for a while about Dylan’s lyrics. I haven’t heard much of Simon and Garfunkel, so I can’t really compare, but I can relate to what you’re saying about Dylan. I felt completely the same way until I started learning his songs and memorizing lyrics. When you’re trying to learn a song and the lyrics, you read them over and over and they really start painting a picture in your head and you start relating things to your life (at least I do). The songs take on a TOTALLY different meaning once I’ve learned the lyrics and can play it without reading them or anything. That’s one of my favorite things to do, learn a new Dylan tune.
^ I’m kind of the same way in the sense that when I want to listen to some Simon and Garfunkle, I’ll just throw on Dylan playing “The Boxer”.
man…say what you want to, and I’m not a fan of her usual stuff but…this… THIS… HO LEE SHIAT y’all… talk about owning a freaking song. Nobody could do a better tribute to this man’s legacy than this skinny little white girl… watch, just forget who she normally is and don’t judge… it’s awesome.
Sweet!
Carl Landry went 31st (1st pick in 2nd round) to the Sonics! That was way higher than a lot, if not most, experts predicted. I saw a lot of mock-drafts that didn’t even have him being drafted. What a bunch of tools.
Tina Weymouth is sexy.
There. That’s a bit easier on the eyes.
^hahaha!
take that tina weymouth!
Tina come get some ham!
Probably true.
I was watching the 1980 Rome DVD, and wow wow wow wow.
Yeah, Tiny definitely had it going back in the day. Plus she’s one of the few gals who I felt TRULY excelled at her instrument. There’s plenty of gals who can play but I’d never put them in the upper-echolon of musicians. I would with Tiny. She rocks the house, ya’ll.
who in the F is t. weymouth?

Look it up, don’t ask easy questions.
sheesh, ok, ok
