Undermind

Discuss!

I remember someone on this board once pointed out that some of the words on this song hint at the possibility of a future reunion. Well, upon a recent listen, it almost seems like every line in the songs means something about their future. Allow me to break it down.

Undecided, undefined > Theyre undecided and this “breakup” isn’t really defined, it could just be another hiatus.

Undisturbed yet undermined > Don’t Know

Relocated not retired > Self explanatory

Reprimanded and rewired

Mystified and misshapen > possibly could mean a return with a new style

Misinformed but not mistaken > us fans were misinformed about what’s going on, but are not mistaken because we don’t now any better.

Reinvented, redefined > The new Phish will be

Rearranged but not refined > They’ll have a new stage setup

Unrelenting, understroked > All of this because Phish is unrelenting

Undeterred yet unprovoked > No one can discourage them from coming back, but no amount of bitching from us will provoke them to come back either.

The rest of the words repeat, but hopefully you got the point. Or maybe its just me being an idiot. Either way, they’ll be back, reinvented and redifined.

That they never played this song is a travesty. It would fit right into rotation with similar songs like 46 Days and Twist. I adore the groove it establishes and Ray’s solo on the studio version is tight.

yea i think this song wouldve been extremely funky live.

I’ll fight for this song until I die. I adore it. I’m so glad it gave the title to their last album.

There will be another album.

It is one of my faves off of the album; then again, I adore the album, on a whole.

except for that damned SECRET SMILE!

So Phish’s only live version is going to be on the bonus disc that comes when you pre-order the Brooklyn DVD off of Dry Goods. Sure it’s from a soundcheck, but I’m still psyched to hear it.

Oh yeah! That is awesome news. Are you sure the version of Undermind from the soundcheck will only be audio? That would be sweet if they had video footage of that.

I just pulled out this CD for a 10klf trip… Wow this has so much room to move… hmm… live? yeah!

That’s the only time they played this song live? I just got my bonus CD today actually.

That’s the only time they played it ever as far as I know. I found the soundcheck Brooklyn version to be extremely disappointing and very sloppy for such a simple song. It hardly even sounds like it at first…

I love this song and agree it’s a shame they never played it live at a show. The whole album is great, and I really hope when they come back these songs are not forgotten.
On the studio version the intro to this song is one of my favorite parts to the album. It just sounds good.

This is a good track. I agree with Greg that it should have been played live and played well. The groove is too cool.

This song could have easily been jammed on if they didn’t break up

I still don’t own the album Undermind. If I can find it on eBay for under $5 and free shipping, I might purchase it.

Never have heard the studio version of this song. Listening to the one from Hampton AND WHAT A PERFECT DEBUT CONCERT FOR THIS SONG! I mean the lyrics fit perfectly. I think thats why they never played it. Because they felt like the lyrics didn’t apply to there PH music and they were saving it for the perfect time. AND THEY DID! WOOOOOHHHHOOOOO PHISH IS BACK FOR GOOD. Still too excited to put it into words how happy i am that these guys are back up on stage together as PHISH. The planets have a aligned and before you know it the jam band scene will have returned to it’s previous glory in the 90’s. WAHOOOO!!!

I prefer the studio version of this tune. I hope they go back to it when they play it live butt I can live with the current one.

^WHATTT???

i can’t stop listening to Sunday’s debut, its so cruntchy!!!

learning bassline eventually, such a sick song

^^yeah gotta disagree there hombre

the Hampton Undermind was a bit rough on the edges (Trey mumbled through a lot of the lyrics, then just kept repeating the same line) but the direction they took it is what encouraged me! Funkified all the way. And it worked.
