Virginia Tech Rampage

hahahaha… look you can gun control all you want, melt the guns for all I care. No matter what you do this will happen again.

You know Guyute right?.. he’s an ugly pig. All your measures will not stop the Guyutes of this world.

perhaps not giving guns to people who have been admitted to mental hospitals would be a good place to start:

The student who shot dead at least 30 people at Virginia Tech University was admitted to a mental health unit in late 2005, police have revealed.

So your solution is to discriminate against everyone that has ever been in a mental hospital? I thought we had no tolerance for discrimination?

Guyute is much smarter than that.

That would be just another band-aid. You can band-aid till your blue in the face, a million band-aids. Then the ugly pig is in your face again.

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be pushy. I know that something like this strikes us all deep in our hearts and we all wish to never see something like this happen again. Its sad.

are you saying that you think that we should give the mentally ill access to assault rifles for the sake of equality? jesus goldfish. you’re a maniac.

The only reason you need a gun to protect yourself in the US, is if you want to shoot another person.

Well atleast thats settled

Its not that I can’t understand having restrictions on guns or any harmful weapon. Sure that is necessary. But to think that we can prevent another VT tragedy with gun control is nothing short of giving people a false sense of security.

Actually I think letting students carry handguns on campus maybe a better idea. That way atleast the killer isn’t the only one with a gun.

i thought the exact same thing

me too. it’s very sad.

I don’t mean to start a political gun control debate, but this makes no sense. Putting a gun in anyone’s hand is not a very good idea at all. Who knows, a student could go crazy during their time at school and then shoot people, with the gun they bought/was given to them for protection.

Simple equation. Less guns on the street+ A new, enhanced form of emotional and psychiatric for teens and 20 somethings who obviously need some help= Less chance for VT kind of shootings.

Putting guns in peoples hands isn’t going to solve anything.

To me, the biggest tragedy of all this will be that this incident will not be used to strengthen gun or ammunition control. There will be another school rampage and another workplace shooting in the not too distant future.

Holy crap! Has anyone seen this yet?

“Gunman sent package to NBC news”

It’s been reported that Cho, according to court documents from 2005, was labled mentally ill. Here’s a quote: “(Cho is) mentally ill and in need of hospitalization, and presents an imminent danger to self or others as a result of mental illness, or is so seriously mentally ill as to be substantially unable to care for self, and is incapable of volunteering or unwilling to volunteer for treatment.”
I’m not playing the blame game, and maybe I’m being naive, but isn’t this the sort of shit that bubbles up during a background check, say, when you’re buying, I don’t know, an air conditioner?

yes, more guns is definitely the answer. in fact, i hear that if you go on jeopardy and say “what is more guns?” for every question, you automatically get them all right. same for the SAT’s. just pencil that shit in. guaranteed 1600. :-*

I think this is a good example of some of the wierd logic surrounding gun politics. Something like this happens, which is dramatic and horrible and dominates the media, and it shapes people’s idea of what gun violence really is in the US. I think arming everybody would obviously help stop these crazy psychopaths before they could hurt more people. The problem is, these cases of crazy psychopaths going on killing rampages is not very common. It’s pretty hard to find any reliabe sattistics about gun deaths, but almost everything seems to indicate that the crazy psycho killer, or even the random violent criminal everyone is scared of doesn’t account for a lot of gun violence in the US. By succumbing to the fear of these stories, and buying into the idea that more guns and more violence will help protect people, you only increase the likelihood of gun deaths.

I don’t think gun control is ultimate solution for gun violence, but because the idea that we live in the wild west where everyone has to kill people with guns in order to survive has made it ridiculously simple to get a gun in te US. That’s what people want to think. That is the fantasy people want to make out of their lives.

I also think that all the “warning signs” coming out are telling. The problem with this person was not that it was easy to get a gun. The government can’t protect everyone from every situation like this. It’s up to families, friends, communites, schools, churches, etc. to recognize these things. People that want a gun laws to keep peope like this from going on killing rampages are not accepting responsibilit for themselves and their communties. It’s the same logic that says using advanced technology to drop powerful bombs in Baghdad is going to protect Americans from guys from Saudi Arabia using box cutters to hijack airplanes.

“Yesterday, One car bomb alone in the mainly Shi’ite Sadriya neighborhood killed 140 people and wounded 150, police said, making it the worst insurgent bomb attack in Baghdad since the US-led invasion in 2003.”

Why aren’t people freaking out about this?
Is it because its brown people or because we don’t care about what happens anywhere in the world unless its here in the states?

I don’t want to seem insensitive about this, but HUNDREDS of people are being killed EACH DAY in Iraq and people don’t say shit. Something like this happens here in the State and people are so shocked.

Wake up people.

This is EASY ratings for the news.

The point Gamecat brought up is “halfway around the world and doesn’t directly affect me.”

But it does. I think the problem is people trust the media to be the know-all and end-all for what they need to know. And if they only get there news from the TV, God help them.

Every now and then I will listen to Opie&Anthony (and I am not trying to claim they are a great, or even good, or even average, source for the news), but they told some stories on how cold the news is, especially the reporters. They were speaking of some woman news reporter in Colorado right after Columbine. She was interviewing this one kid, asking the hard hitting questions, basically forcing him/her to start crying. Once the interview was done, she looked at the cameraman and said something along the lines of, “Well, I surely got my promotion with this story.”

What a cold-hearted bitch. Which is what the United States media is.

My worst suspicions confirmed…

^Good call right there. The fact that people were saying he needed help and were trying but with no effect may lead to people trying harder next time.

My whole point with the “carry handguns on campus” thing is to see there are so many different angles one could come at with regards to gun control. All of which, I think, are only a band-aid solution and reactionary; designed to make those left behind in the tragedy feel good.

Look at my first post in this thread. What I was “proposing” is exactly what happened in Texas after a shooting rampage. A law was overturned that allowed people more freedom carring a concealed weapon. In fact many people feel loosening gun control is the answer. So then a big ol’ debate rages and getting to the heart of the matter never happens.

Its certainly not for me to say this or that should happen and I’m full of faults and mistakes but I like Booji’s… or er, Rahim’s  idea of assuming responsibility for trying to help others. Yes, it’s a difficult job and sometimes there is simply nothing that can be done to help someone. Sometimes we do all we can. But atleast we tried. That English Prof who brought Cho to the attention of others was trying her best.

^Which again brings us to the recurring theme of the current American culture. People won’t accept the responsibility of their own freedom. When we suffer because of our own negligence, we cry for our leaders to take control of our lives.

Sideshow Bob: Your guilty conscience may force you to vote Democratic, but deep down inside you secretly long for a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize criminals, and rule you like a king. That’s why I did this: to protect you from yourselves. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a city to run.
Judge: Bailiffs, place the mayor under arrest.
Sideshow Bob: What? Oh yes, all that stuff I did.

I know its too soon, but i couldnt help but LAUGH MY ASS OFF at the photos that guy took. They look like album covers for HORRIBLE gangsta rap wanna-be albums. The one with the hammer is my favorite.

STOP! HAMMER TIME!

sorry.
