Hidden, high-dollar equipment helped police crack down on drug dealing at this year

^There may not even be another one…

From www.wakarusafestival.com:

Wakarusians:
As many of you know, there were law enforcement and accompanying security issues at this year’s event. Some of these issues continue to make headlines, and regrettably, create controversy. As organizers of the festival, it is very disappointing that these issues have taken away from what otherwise has been a highly praised and truly special event. We cannot tell you how truly sorry we are that these issues occurred at Wakarusa this year and we sincerely apologize to everyone for any violations of your rights and privacy.

To give you some background, we were informed that there would be an increased law enforcement presence at this year’s event. Initially, we were supportive of this when it was presented as an effort to increase the safety of everyone in attendance. It became apparent however that enforcement, not safety and security, was the true mission of the increased law enforcement. We must make it perfectly clear that we did not know of any of the specific measures, tactics or instruments the various law enforcement agencies used at the event. More importantly, Wakarusa does not believe such tactics and equipment were necessary and does not support their use.

If there are not significant assurances that similar procedures won’t materialize in the future, we will not host another Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival. There is simply no justification for these types of tactics to be used on an otherwise courteous and peaceful crowd. These actions are not what Wakarusa is about. Wakarusa has always taken pride in being a fan friendly event

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it till the day I die.

KANSAS IS THE MOST PATHETIC PLACE IN AMERICA!
They are so screwed up it’s not even funny.

It’s really a shame if it doesn’t happen again.

I’ve met Brett and Brian at Waka '05 (TeamB), and they were totally cool guys. Like I’ve said before, Waka '06 was a complete 180degree turn from Waka '05. I was constantly looking over my shoulder even when I was just walking Shakedown with a glass beer bottle.

And when they say “for music fans by music fans”, thats exactly what they mean. The people who put on Wakarusa are just like us, they used to travel for Phish, went to Bonnaroo/other festivals years ago before there was a big festival in every other state.

Wakarusa '04 was booked simply by word of mouth and Brian and Brett traveling the country. It is truly a shame what is happening, just Kansas officials trying to kill a cornered mouse.

Right after this years Wakarusa I did not feel the same as last years. After last year I COULD NOT WAIT to go back. Hell, even check somewhere on this board, I am willing to bet around 07/2005 I was pushin’ Wakarusa saying it was the best time ever. After this years Wakarusa I was just glad to get the fuck out of there. Now, don’t get me wrong, I had a blast beyond all blasts, but there was a nagging little something I don’t know how to describe that just did not make me want to come back for next years.

So basically all I am saying is, next summer I WILL NOT be heading back to Wakarusa, even if they do hold it. Part of me wishes they do not hold it next summer, because it could spell the end of a beautiful festival.
