WAKARUSA Memories

Yeah, it’s a bummer I didn’t get a chance to meet everyone… I met Icc, Funky, Neck and that might be about it… Arrived in Lawrence about 11:00 and didn’t get into that mother fu$%er until 4… We got stuck in traffic forever! Pretty shitty until we were like “fuck it” and the whole street started throwing down, getting prepared/crunk and tossing disc and what not… Anyway once I got in, I finally found my Iowa friends (who I was camping with) and shut the phone off… Meeting inside the event was kind of a hassel. I made it just in time for Tim Reynolds who was one I totally didnt’ want to miss. He threw the shit down!

But yeah, lots of stories from a great weekend and it really does stink that I didnt’ get a chance to meet everybody but I would only imagine that we’ll all be togather again someday.

Mick Toothless is WesManTooth’s owner…although NO ONE can really OWN WesManTooth, honestly. Wes is a DogGod.

yes…you cannot OWN a god…you just cant…

Here’s some festival pictures from the local Lawrence paper:

Damn, sounds like an awesome time guys!

That quote from Vern’s son is classic! Going up in the Overheard in OKP section for sure!!

My greatest memories of waka are as follows:
Feelin the vibes pouring off STS9, jamming out to buckethead, and groovin to Bisco. And smoking good weed with new friends. I also had a lot of fun hanging out with Thom and Helen almost all of sunday night. (thanks for letting me tag along with you guys).

Other random thoughts:

I am surprised, my “Tapeworm” seems to have died. because I am no longer in a constant state of hunger.

Has everybody forgotten that one trippin college dude on the first night trying to fight police off by the campgrounds stage?

Nitrous tanks suck. Especially when they bring all the sketchoids and undercover PO-lice by your camp and are stumbling their stupid asses all over Vernixx’s tent at 3:00 in the morning.

Does anybody have soundboards of Buckethead or STS9?

Oh yeah. And I also laughed my ass off when I saw Thom struggling to quickly hide a ceramic holding jar/vial type-thing when he saw that security was searching cars.

I slept right through the nitrous debacle Sunday night…thanks for policing my tent, son.

LOL!!!

maybe it’s better i wasn’t there for that…

allright here’s some of the show’s that really struck me as top notch.

Mutaytor was something more or less, out of this world…There definetely a talented group of people who know how to throw down big time.

The Mule was one hot set… I walked over to the Lips to see the opening notes and ended up taking off during Yoshima…Warren and the Mule was where I needed to be.

The Greyboy Allstars threw down two wicked sets. Each day they brought the heat and I was super glad I didnt’ miss out.

Bela was a highlight along with Grace Potter and all the above. YMSB, STS9, Disco Biscuits, and Tim Reynolds all get my highest regards in terms of what I thought about all their sets. Amazing. I would have paid way more then $100 for this ticket.

Bassnectar was mind blowing…About 20 people told me that it was not to miss and they were sure right. Sick, sick, sick! P-Groove also threw down a way impressive late night set Thursday. The opener was a highlight for sure… It was something I haven’t heard from them.

RRE and Keller were both breathtaking…Keller and the Kells played a very pumping show…

Last and not least teh Yard Dog Road Show was another spectacle I’m glad I didn’t miss… What a show! Bela @ the small tent @ 2:00 p.m. Sunday was badass. Doesn’t get much better relaxing in the shade, puffing and listening to Bela. Sweet ya know!

And I just want to say to everybody out there who got fucked with and really didn’t deserve it…that I feel for you and that some things the enforcement were doing out there was completely bullshit…Sorry for your troubles b/c that shit sucks I know.

Anyway, glad most people had a great time and I hope to do it again some day.

shit! I forgot about my experience saturday night at the dance tent after the flaming lips. It was pretty dead until the last night saturday. But there was at least a hundred people at the dance tent saturday. It was jamming.

shit! I forgot about my experience saturday night at Brothers Past after the flaming lips. it was rockin’. But there was at least a hundred people rockin to them. It was jamming.

Damn Matt…

I am REALLY surprised I didn’t see you somewhere (not that that is an easy thing).

But from the looks of who you saw, we saw 90% of the same shows.

Was anybody at the late-night Perpetual Groove set in the campground stages? I was out of my mind by that time in the night. I think there was only about 20-30 people there. GREAT dancing space.

Then I seem to remember smoking bowls with teh Thom and teh Helen in a spotlight in some backroad… I have no idea where we were… Or even if we were smoking bowls… We were doing something though I tell’s ya!

Another great set… Rose Hill Drive. These guys really impressed me last year, and I missed their 3AM set just because I got drunk and fell asleep early… But the next day they played in the brutal sun, but it was well worth staying up there!

As everyone said… Grace Potter was just amazing, and moist. She was definitely moist.

The little bit of Brothers Past I saw Sunday was great stuff, but the black OKP shirt I was wearing was taking its toll, so I had to head back for shade.

Ohhh, and Bernie Worrell was GREAT. The beautiful PFunk/Talking Heads mix that I love so much. He ended the set with a killer “Burning Down the House” which seemed to jam on for about 15 minutes or so.

Bands I am dissapointed I missed:
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Jerry Joseph (and the Jackmormons)
Mutaytor
Assembly of Dust
and The Flaming Lips (although, I am not horrible dissapointed, because The Mule owns Wakarusa. Best set of the weekend)

Now whos been feeding my vegan dog bologna!!!

I had a fuckin blast this week! Everybody was so much fun and good times were had. Here are some pictures for now, and i’ll get to writing my favorite moments later, enjoy!
