Walfredo

I love this song, it is great. Watching page play drums on Live in Vegas DVD is priceless. It makes you realize how multi dimensional the band was and that Mike is actually a pretty decent guitar player.

Page’s drumming is pretty painful to listen too though, everyone else is pretty sufficient on their instruments.

I remember I purposely traded for a copy of 2/14/97 to get a copy of this song and Rock-A-William since I hadn’t heard either song. I definitely like Walfredo more, especially Trey’s piano part. (Not to mention that 2/14/97 is a FANTASTIC show).

And, I tell ya, nothing was cooler than seeing that 9/30/00 Vegas show broadcast over the internet live and seeing them bust out Walfredo as the opener.

Walfredo, where did you go? Who put you up to it? How much did you get paid?
Another song they never played enough of.

BUMP! My name namesake.

I agree w/ everybody on what a great song this is. The lyrics have a cool twist on them…I like how they refrence the fishman telluride incident. Cool song.

what is the specific incident they reference there?
Can someone give me the date? description?

I believe it was the 7/30/88 show. I’ve always been told that Fishman was on a magical journey somewhere in the mountains and missed the first two sets of the show…He finally arrived and Trey refrences the incident somewhere throughout the show. Something is telling me its during the Antelope. Not 100% though.

The more I think about it, the cloudier my memory gets. I could be totally wrong on this I guess. Not I’m really not sure.

No, you’re pretty accurate. I think this event gets referenced later, in '91 or so. Zoot Horn recently made the ensemble collection of shows with this reference available elsewhere around here.

I think that’s “proficient” you’re thinking of… but yeah, Page’s personality certainly isn’t the right one for drums. He’s too chill and laid back.

YO! I didn’t realize nobody had given props to MIKE… Mike kicks ass on guitar. Definitely the best of the four on his abnormal instrument. Live in Vegas is sufficient testament.

I think Mike and the rest of the band look awkward during the Vegas DVD. You can tell they hadn’t played this for years.

i dont necessarily agree with this. i mean after all they are playing someone else’s instrument. on top of that they had to deal with technical difficulties before the song started.

“Walfredo” is the kind of song they rehearse before performing. No questions asked.

other than grasping an unfamiliar instrument, what sort of uncomfortable behavior are you witnessing?

Very good points, exactly what I was going to say. They definitely rehearsed it before, especially considering it’s a show opener and isn’t segued into. They look awkward because they feel awkward playing different instruments, especially Page. It looks awkward cause it is and it isn’t normal.

I bought the Vegas '00 DVD when it first came out and enjoyed the “Walfredo” opener, but didn’t figure out that “Walfredo” was the name of a member of Santana until recently.

This could very well be the best part of the Vegas DVD.

I must say I really dislike Page’s drumming on this tune…

I’ve come around to Walfredo. It’s one of those cool rare songs and it’s cool to see them on the Vegas DVD. It’s an opener, which it doesn’t work well as IMO. I much prefer rotation jams or this song seguing out of a rotation jam, though. It just really ruins the flow of a show to me when they have to move to each others’ instruments without some kind of jam going on so they can move one by one.
