Warning: Extremely Random Post

OK, so it is Friday, got a bit of the rum out, feeling like expressing my opinion on this long forgotten album I am listening too.

Blind Melon - Nico

I love Blind Melon, one of my favorite bands, wishing SH didn’t have to pass on. But Nico has to be one of the most under-rated albums of the 90’s. Of course when 99% of people think of Blind Melon, it is “No Rain”, but that song sounds nothing like the Blind Melon I know.

Between covers of Steppenwolf, John Lennon, a “Stripped Away” version of their big hit, and my favorite song by them “Soul One”, I can not believe that Blind Melon still hangs in the one-hit wonder category (although I don’t believe they are).

Anyways… I am willing to bet anyone who is into Phish would love Blind Melon. There have been times when I have argued that if you take the jamming out of the Grateful Dead (blashpemy I know), you would have Blind Melon. Amazing lyrics, music, soul, beauty, everything.

OK, enough rambling for now.

^i reckon. an exceedingly underrated band. i love their soul, their individuality. yeah, and i wonder why they still are considered under the one-hit wonder classification. i don’t know. but i love their music - soak the sin, holy man, change, 3’s a magic number(at least their version of it; cover?), tones of home, toes across the floor, 2x4, etc. the list goes on and on. all great songs.

what about the “violet femmes”. if you haven’t heard of them, take a listen, i’m sure you guys will love them. another first-class underrated band. i love them - waiting for the bus, gone daddy gone, country death song, black girls, add it up, american music, etc. have a listen. enjoy.

laters

The Violent Femmes are just plain amazing as well. I would throw them in the same category as Blind Melon. Gone Daddy Gone is such an amazing song, American Music, Kiss Off, Gimme the Car, all great stuff.

If you have never listened to them, go out and get Add It Up right now, you may be surprised.

Plus Phish opened for Violent Femmes once.
But yes, both bands are great.

I miss Shannon Hoon… :frowning:

He was a great one. Blind Melon was brilliant.

When did Phish open for Violent Femmes? Wierd to think of how far they came.

Funny… I listened to Nico just this morning. Blind Melon is the shit. I don’t know if I can quite agree on the Violent Femmes, but I’d never try and talk anybody out of liking them.

Will,

My affection for Blind Melon has grown so much in the last few years… I want some stuff, what is out there that I can get ahold of that is good to add, I have the No Rain (Blind Melon) album, but after that?

Signed,
Me

I know those and good calls on what to add, but I guess are there any ‘live’ ones out there or bootlegs worth a pick up?

nico is one of my all time favorites by any band. the reworked lyrics of pusherman… goddamn that bible pushin man!

and i like the ripped away version of no rain better than the original.

some blind melon info for anyone who didn’t know, thats shannon on backup vocals on the song “don’t cry” by guns and roses. he’s in the video too i think.

listening to all their releases they seem to get darker, or at least the first one was more upbeat. i wonder if that had to do with the drugs.

but nico is great

rips my life away

Drugs? In a band? no…

Letters From a Porcupine is a must-own.

Their set from Woodstock is pretty amazing as well.

And most definitely get Soup, it is their best album by far. And that isn’t to put down the other 2, heck Soul One may be my favorite song they recorded… but Soup is just one of the best albums ever.

If you remember Much Music from Canada, they did an amazing CD-length special for them too.

The Drugs definitely got to Shannon Hoon.

Foil-Head FTW

^Wow, never saw that… I know a little history on Hoon, but that there is too funny…

Nico is actually the only Melon I have. I enjoy it very much!

I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record.
