Ways to Improve the OKP

Okay. In light of recent events here, I believe we should constructively come up with ways to improve our community. The Oh Kee Pa is obviously not the site it used to be. This thread will be somewhere to voice our problems and try to fix them in a POSITIVE way. I do not mean this as a personal attack towards anyone. This should be a positive thread, focused on Phish and non Phish related topics. I hope Ian will chime in on certain things that he has the power to change as Administrator.

Here are some of my ideas:

  1. Try to enhance the Phish related boards. It seems like no one ever posts there anymore. Ian, could you possibly add a new feature to get people excited? Try to promote the Theater feature more? That is really cool.

  2. Heavily moderate or get rid of the Reunion Rumor Mill. With Trey’s legal problems and the way things look now, it doesn’t look like there will be a reunion soon. It is just a site of “unbreeziness”. People are always fighting over unsubstantiated rumors.

Any other ideas? PLEASE BE CIVIL. I really hope we can use this thread to improve the OKP.

Good post Mcc, and well needed. I am always open to suggestions on how to improve the Oh Kee Pa. Let’s put our brains together and come up with some great ideas to put into practice.

As for new features for the Phish related boards, I will have to get my thinking cap on. But as I said before, let’s all chip in and we will find the answer. I am trying to find an option to let other members add movies to the Theater. I would like it to be accessible to all.

Reunion board… I agree that there is a lot of “unbreeziness” in the posts there but surely that’s just people airing their passion for Phish in different ways? Keeping a closer eye on its moderation would however, be wise.

hm. i just don’t really see a problem so much as people just being people. really, aren’t like 99.9% of the people who post here generally extremely cool (excluding myself of course, i’m a filthy prick not to mention a corrupt corporate puppet)? i’ve looked at PT before and to this very day, there is simply no comparison.

i guess what i’m trying to say is, i don’t think there’s anything to worry about here. this place is what it is because of the people, and the people are great. disagreements and the occasssional argument can be resolved, and always are; this very thread being a great example of how much thought is put into keeping the OKP healthy. i just don’t see that much of a need to moderate peoples opinions and such. then again, maybe it would be helpful. i don’t know.

ha ha, sorry–not much of a contribution. but onwards and upwards…

Its not the same as it used to be, but things aren’t all that bad at all.

This episode with vern leaving has just caused everyone to panic for some reason.

Maybe doing a few things differently might be cool, but c’mon people.

The reunion board is fine. I haven’t seen a lot of bickering in there at all. DON’T GO THERE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO. IMO, this is obviously just another hiatus. Phish will be back, whether the negative nancies like it or not. This is just my opinion, so I’d like to have a place to discuss events/rumors/signs pointing to a reunion. Big deal. People who think discussion like this is pathetic or a waste of time–don’t go in the reunion threads. simple as that.

The fact that Phish is not playing together (and hasn’t for 2.5 years) is a lot of the reason why the Phish boards are deader than they used to be. There’s not much we can do about that.

I am NOT suggesting that we get rid of the reunion board because I don’t believe in a reunion. And I am NOT suggesting that these changes have everything to do with Vern, that episode is an example of a problem. I believe we hit our peak at the time of the Chess game, we can certainly get back to those glory days. What is the problem with a bit of forward thinking in order to improve the state of things. We have never been perfect, there is always room for improvement. I have noticed this problem for a while now, and we should fix it.

-edit. I don’t want to sound defensive, but this is something I believe is happening and I am merely suggesting some changes, that is all!

My question here is…

What in the world do you want us to do?

I don’t see any downward spiral, this place just keeps going.

All this place is is US. It is not like some machine comes in and starts spitting out awesome threads we want to talk about.

I think maybe the problem is people relying too much on an internet message board.

Just my thought though.

And definitely not singling anyone out, because I have read a LOT of posts saying “oh this place is getting stale” and whatnot.

Well, maybe take that energy and find something interesting to talk about.

Sitting here and typing, “wow this place is not like it used to be” is not going to fix the problem (which I still do not see).

So basically… If you want to talk about something, come here. Want to be entertained, play a game. Or take a walk. Or smoke a fat joint to yourself and put on some Phish. Oh, then you can discuss the show you are listening to, maybe someone else will have something to point out about that particular show.

I half-jokingly started the Past Its Prime thread, but I immediately realized it was dumb, and now its turned out to be a pretty funny thread.

I just don’t see what all the hub-bub is about. Want to brighten things up? think of something to talk about then.

I lurk here all the freaking time because I’m always at the computer (at work and school), and I LIKE YOU GUYS!

We shouldn’t be so critical of ourselves.

Keep the reunion board. The reason that it exists in the first place is because without it, every other section of the site was bombarded with reunion threads.

We’re not in crisis, that’s for sure. I’m just acting upon other peoples wishes. This is as good a time as any for suggestions :slight_smile:

Agreed. I certainly don’t think we’re done for or anything like that. We should always be thinking about how to make the community better, not just when there are some negative events happenning.

I mean, we do have to be realistic, this is a message board. We shouldn’t rely on it for everything. But this is a place I like to come to when I am upset, or sad. It is a great place, and for the year that I have been year, we have preached how we are going to be a great place, an alternative to places like PT. I am not saying we are anything like PT, but I like this place and want to make it better.
