OK folks. This is an announcement. Hold onto your pants, and if you happen to have a hat, hold onto that too.
After many happy years here at ProBoards, I feel that we have finally outgrown our surroundings and are limited in one way or another by things like modding, admin and customization features.
I’ve had a long think about this, considering just staying here at ProBoards and putting up with these limitations and using workarounds to take our board into the future but I’ve decided that it would be best to move to a new board, namely phpBB.
What does this mean for us?
Hopefully, nothing, other than you will get to use a more reliable, fully featured, moddable message board with no problems whatsoever. In an ideal world, the change should be relatively straight-forward.
Will our topics, usernames etc remain intact?
ProBoards obviously don’t want to lose communities so they don’t make it very easy if one wants to migrate. This means we don’t have direct access to a database of all our information. A clever chap out there has, however, written a script that can apparently transfer all of this information across to a new phpBB. I am going to attempt to use it so we can just move on like nothing has happened. Fingers crossed.
What if that doesn’t work?
If it doesn’t work. I am all for locking topics here and starting a fresh at phpBB. Believe me, I don’t want to have to do that. I really don’t. I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
When is this going to happen?
I am going to begin trying to get the information out of the board this morning. I intend to do this by using classic interrogation techniques, truth serum, two handkerchiefs, a banana and the aforementioned script that I found.
I will keep you updated through this thread!
