The only reason I could see someone voting for Taste is because they have heard too many Melt’s. After listening to the whole year of '95 I’ve just heard too many Taste’s. Melt always amazes me.

Wow, I dunno. I’ve always loved SOAM. When Mike starts, it’s like OHHH YEAH, here we go! I never really cared for Taste until a year or two ago. I think it may have been a 99 show that I had in my car and I kept listening and listening to the Taste and that was it. I’ve been hooked ever since. I mean, Page really wails and it’s like this never ending build up of musical tension. Man I love it so. Fuck it, I’m going with Taste!
There are a lot of Melts that are my favorite Phish moments ever.
Although I love Page’s solos in most Tastes, I always thought the song to be disjointed and incomplete. Maybe that’s why I thought Limb was where Trey really wanted to go with the Taste emotion. Limb is the improved version of Taste.
In any case, Split Open and Melt, played with conviction is an unbelievable composition, and easily gets my vote here.

I love the studio Melt best … live there were always these little differences in the verse/chorus section that I didn’t like as much … Taste was good for being really well done live, IMO.
But I just like the lyrics of Melt much better, and it’s got an atonal fugue, doesn’t it? And that dark jam with the extra beat … all those layered guitars and the lady singin’ “Melt … Split open and melt …”
Ever try playing any of the parts of this song? I played bass on it at a talent show/variety show kinda thing in 1991; not kidding. It was really very good actually - we were an 11 piece with lady singers and horns!
I really dig Taste. But 93/94 Versions of Melt are some of the sickest Jams the Band ever created.

Split Open is near definitive Phish… i didn’t get to see it nearly often enough :oP
