I don’t even think of it as much of an upset though. Free is probably the most underrated jamming vehicle.
Free is a good one, but being a huge Leo fan, you can’t beat the end-of-coil Page solo. Nummy

Love Free for its sentimentality and composition. Thought it and Theme to be the two strongest songs from the Billy Breathes collection of music. I’m going with Free just to tighten the competition a bit.

Coil’s a nice tune, with the great outros by Page, but you pretty much knew what you were getting. Free on the other hand had that possiblity of surprising you. It may have had many ‘standard’ versions, but Coil was just about always standard.

I never liked Free much as a song. Love some of that jam on the Brooklyn DVD!
Coil on the other hand, … my God it is truly beyond me that the beauty of the composition that is Squirming Coil (not to mention that the implication of freedom in Coil strikes me as more profound than that which is found in Free, ironically) could be eclipsed by any element of Free, even the element of surprise.

I HATE COIL… hate it with a passion… and no, I don’t know why - I just do. That and Julius…never liked either one of them.
And I think Free is a great song. So I have to go with it.

the craziest thing about this pairing is how much i remember people HATED “Free” for like 3 or 4 years when “Billy Breathes” first came out. and i mean HATED.
