I don’t even really like SOAMule that much.
Maze is a much better composition, and played with energy and conviction, downright devastating.
How is Maze a better composition?
I wouldn’t say either is really “better”.
Maze is pretty simplistic IMO, much like Chalkdust. Same riff/verse over and over again.
And then Trey solo>Page solo>Trey solo.
The Mule>Chicken Shack>Mule and Mule>Magilla>Mule win it alone for me.
How is Mule anything more than a sketchily written bluegrass wannabe?
HA!
Me too.
Answering questions with more questions…
I’m sorry you feel that way.
Why are you feeling sorry for the way I feel about Mule as compared to Maze? I can enjoy a good Mule as easily as the next person, so I’m not missing anything by picking Maze over Mule in this comparison.
Maze for me.
mule in honor of my first avatar
Mule
Love the breakdowns
But I hate…lazerbeams.
I voted maze, even thought I don’t really love either song. But something about a song about lazerbeams and animals just doesn’t seem right… so… maze it is.
I like both songs and both of them can rip it up… but I like the darkness of a nasty maze. Mule, for all its energy, is always silly and characteristic of Gordon, a mock song.
^And that reminds me, where’s Fikus on this list?
“Fikus,” and to answer another person’s inquiry (I think Stevo), and “Spock’s Brain” didn’t even enter the discussion.
Mule is funny, but Maze is epic. I’ve always loved the Maze lyrics … not a huge Tom Marshall fan, but this one has some great imagery and cool word choices … and the main quiet groove that the song starts off with is so brilliant … each of the four play such a uniquely cool part, and it all locks into this amazing, one-of-a-kind piece of music that can only be Maze.
I love Scent of a Mule too … I love the freakin’ laser beams thing. When you take the chorus out of the context that the verse puts it in, it makes even LESS sense!! And it’s great both live and in the studio too. Live you get the russian dance segment, studio you get banjo.
But Maze, for me, is what makes Phish truly awesome. These kinds of Phish songs are like genius paintings, complete with optical illusion and expert detail.
Easy one here. The Corn wins!
tough.
went for maze though.
love em both.
Maze is a proper rager, but…
Mule.
never done seen me askin for a UFO.
You’ll never get out of this maze…
