solar garlic can’t be bought… right thom?
Uh oh.
I grew tired of seeing Stash played after 96. There are some I love to listen to now that there’s no Phish around. But I still havent tired of Maze.
There is really something about Stash that just does it for me that Maze doesn’t have. I really don’t know what it is. I know Maze has amazing energy and the ability to melt your face right off, but I think it’s just that I’ve heard too many of them and none really stand out in my mind. Stash I’ve probably heard even more of, but there are many versions that I consider definitive highlights of certain shows. At this point in this game I can’t come up with any really logical arguments for voting for what I vote for, but it’s just that feeling.
I figured this would be a close matchup.
18-16 “Stash”
man fuck. furblanket rat. I thought the lyrics to Maze we’re “livin’ in out space” for the longest time.
I love them both.
I actually never caught a live “Maze.”
I saw 1 “Stash,” and it was fantastic.
That’s why I voted for “Maze.”
i don’t know on this one. too close too call for me. coin flip. maze it is.
Stash. One of Trey’s greatest compositions in my mind.
I love the sections where Trey’s line is in 5/4 time and Fish is in 5/16, but the 5/16 is played like four big beats with five sixteenth notes apiece while Mike and Page just slam the offbeats…
[/music geek rant]
Stash is really a truly amazing song. I hated it for the longest time, and the Stash clap annoys me every time I hear it. That being said, I don’t think there is any other Phish song that breaks the music down and literally tears it apart as well as Stash. I continue to be astounded that they even know what song they’re playing at times during the jam, and yet they almost always bring it back. True life, death, and resurrection in one neat little musical package.
Stash. It brings you back to life.
This is a toughie. I went with Stash because I really like Stash -> Manteca from 10/30/98.
Wow, this is a tough one. Maze was a song that I kind of didn’t like live until I actually saw it live, then i learned to appreciate the raw energy from it. But I can’t vote against Stash. Listening to Stash on A Live One was what turned me onto Phish in the first place. Truly a life-changing song.
I got to see early versions of both of these tunes, and they’ve long been among my favorite Phish songs.
This poll sucks.
I mean, it doesn’t suck … it’s a great matchup.
I just … can’t … face … the decision … !!

Stash.
The “maybe so and maybe not” chorus is one of my very favorite Phish things.
Plus you got the composed part. (meaning the instrumental part after the first verse that has those time sig. changes)
If I were comparing for lyrics only, I’d go w/Maze.
But Stash has more meat to it too I guess.
Man that’s hard!
Maze is awesome for all the right reasons too!
Both of these songs have SOOOO much character.
This is an amazing thread.
Great posts ^^up there from fone and rasta. I completely agree fone.
Stash’s signature “build up and release” that happens during most jams is so spine-tingling.
and then when the lyrics come back and the song closes…oooh that really gets me off.
Man, MAZE is awsome. One of my faves.
Most all my songs are losing.
This is a tough match-up. Went with stash tho… I’ll never forget 12-11-95, as the jam gets started Trey points to the back of the arena ala Babe Ruth… like he was calling hitting it outta the park. Then proceeded to tear it up. That moment alone seals my vote.
^haha! that’s pretty cool
you were at the Dog Log show.
::jealous::
You know when i really think about it, the 2 best Stashes i saw both went into Manteca. That right there seals it that Maze has got to be the one. I heard really great versions of Maze not wishing they’d go into Manteca!
1993-12-31 is some straight mind-bending stuff.
