Thats great bhuji. I worked at a bookstore a few years ago and came across Allen Ginsburg’s “Last Poems”… written in the years just preceeding his death. Great stuff imo. He practiced Tibetan Buddhism and was taught by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. If you’ve never heard of him he is a good read as well. Many a hippie has read “Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism”.
He did, but he doesn’t remember it… and now, apparently, he regrets it.
Hey…my sister lives in Oregon…
i was so fucking wasted that night. i am surprised i spelled it all correctly.
Hah hah.
must have been some night man, 730 am on a tuesday morning SHIT
I think he’s in Mountain Time though, 5:30 am on a Tuesday.
still, SHIT, that’s partying HARD for 15!!
i’m in central time. i recall it being like 2:00… hahaha
Love ya will, hate that quote though. Zappa isn’t any authority on jazz and it sounds like a witty thing he pronounced that was blown up to be a profound statement.
:-*
I say Zappa has huge authourity on Jazz. That quote was just a witty thing though, but it did mean something to him, I’m sure.
^IMO, he sure wasn’t. he may have thought he was. he was influenced by it. he was NOT an authority on it, by any means. He knew some shit about classical composing, synclavier work and the like.
I’m an asshole, ee yodie yo ee yodie yo!!!
i’m popey the sailor man.
Yeah, but the fusion of different types of music, especially classical, and the inclusion of complex composition, chord changes, and strange time signatures with improvisation IS jazz. It’s not neccesarily traditional beebop or anything, and my jazz professors that I had probably wouldn’t quite consider it jazz, exactly, but it’s jazz. Kind of like Avant Garde/Free Jazz, it wasn’t considered jazz by many people for many years. That’s what I love about jazz, is that it isn’t an exact style of music, it’s very broad. But like you said, that’s my opinion. That’s how I’ve always looked at jazz, or jass for you folks from 1914.
Word, good post. That’s sort of what i mean about his free playing and composition ideas. He was influenced by jazz, but i don’t think he has enough grounding in it to lay down some quote about the state of it. Also, his shit didn’t swing…i’m a zappa fan, he’s a genre unto himself, and it doesn’t matter if his shit swing. It was bad(ass) anyway. But he was influenced by IIVI’s b5s, and all that nonsense, but he didn’t invent it. I just don’t take his quote seriously.
Yeah, I don’t think he meant for it to be serious at all. I hear what you’re sayin’. I’m glad you mentioned II V I’s. You obviously know your music dude! It’s like Sound Tribe for me, I call it Tribe Music when people ask me what Genre they are. Or something like that. But I consider them Jazz musicians more than anything. Just like Zappa, his music was it’s own genre.
WHOOOO MUSIC!!
^ STS9 shows always seem to be like Tribal get togethers for sure, esp. recently since their new material came out. I’m gonna try and bump that jazz thread, i can tell we are gonna talk about some heavy shit…keep a lookout out for it guelah
good deal brother.
man, i need me a tribe show. haven’t seen them since New Years weekend.
i’ll be looking for the jazz thread, i think i remember reading it and maybe posting in it at some point. i don’t remember.
