LOL. I completely forgot about that. My sister is still tight with them, but I’ll have to make my own rock star friends. Want to be my friend Kevin?
^Sorry Kevin, that was Glenn who agreed with you about the Wall. Even though some of the music is timeless, I placed the Wall beneath DSOTM mostly because I found the concept derivative of

I disagree that it’s derivative of Tommy, besides it being a double concept album with repeated musical themes. The character’s problems in Tommy aren’t the same, and incidentally they’re far less universally human IMO.
I think I was trying to agree with your comments about Dark Side though, not The Wall. I still think it’s you who was recently saying Dark Side turned you off at first, since you’d been a fan before that point.
Whatever man. PF The Wall & Dark Side Of The Moon. Two albums people don’t hardly listen to or talk about nearly enough.

^^Tommy tops all the Pink Floyd rock operas. Its simply the greatest.

Wait, the lead character in the Wall isn’t symbolically deaf dumb and blind because of the conditions and conditioning in his life? Tommy was “born” that way, but are we all “born” to a set of conditioning in our lives that we must break through by any means possible? Isn’t that also the message in Tommy, ie, overcoming those restrictions to become what you are? The working story line differs, but the underlying messages are kind of the same.
Yeah, and I thought DSOTM was kind of a sellout toward a more commercial package of music, but that may be more Parsons influence than anything. I loved what he did to package the Beatles in Abbey Road as a coherent album when at that time they were undergoing a such stressful breakup dance. But that same packaging was a turnoff for me from PF. But this is a result of my own deafdumb&blindness, and I eventually came to enjoy the music afterall, because they were just so great a band during this time period.

You know, I still have yet to really identify w/Tommy, but I’ll keep this conversation in mind next time thru. I only got that album a few years ago. I’ve been listening to The Wall for over 20 years. So I probably have the opposite relative take on those albums.
Today I listened to A Saucerful of Secrets. That’s one stoned record man.

finally gave this a full, proper listen- lyric/comic book in hand like the good PJ fan I am (this is the latest i’ve been on a Pearl Jam album since at least Yield). All and all I’d say i wasn’t really all that into the whole thing but its still good- just not nearly as good as their last album.
Its easily the most pop flavored PJ album to date with lots of the songs even showing some light Pet Sounds era Beach Boys-like rhythms and arrangements, which is actually quite nice in the spots its apparent in. But with that comes a hit on the harder more punk-like material which suffers from over-production. It doesn’t have the “live” feel of most of their albums and Ed’s voice can sometimes be a little over dramatized and lacking the raw power seen on the last album. Its strange that their first independently made album is their most commercialized inside and out. From the sound to the Target commercial to the super glossy artwork (which is actually pretty awesome stuff by the Pacific Northwest’s own comic strip outlaw Tom Tomorrow). Every one of their albums has its own sound, look and vibe but somehow this one is missing that unmistakable “Pearl Jam feel” that absorbs into the skin.
But all this is not to say that the album is without its highlights. As i mentioned above they struck new ground with the cleaner recordings and tighter arrangements (even with strings on a few) on some of the songs with the appropriate lyrics and melodies:
particularly:
Unthought Known
The End
Speed of Sound
Against the Waves
The Fixer
There’s some other songs that have potential and could grow on me over time (Just Breathe, Got Some, Gonna See My Friend) but those 5 above, upon first listen, stood out as the “keepers” from this somewhat puzzling album from one of my all time favorite bands.
But with most albums (especially by this band) it takes a few listens to really let it sink in. I’ll keep it in rotation in the Volvo for a while and see if it sticks.
