What ELSE are you listening to now?

cool piece of history here

For a brief time every morning, my car audio system comes alive as if by some miracle around 7am when most stations are doing their news, yuk. There is one local station, FM 106.3 calling itself “country thunder”, and for about fifteen minutes every morning now, the only music I get to hear is hard rocking country music.

And to tell you the truth, except for the banality of the lyrics, the music is kickass. Heard a song this morning called “Suds in the Bucket”:

She’s got her pretty little bare feet hangin’ out the window And they’re headin up to Vegas tonight
How could 18 years just up’n walk away?
Our little pony-tail girl grown up to be a woman
Now she’s gone in the blink of an eye
She left the suds in the bucket and the clothes hangin’ out on the line
She left the suds in the bucket and the clothes hangin’ out on the line

She was in the backyard, say it was a little past nine
When her prince pulled up, a white pick up truck
Plenty old enough, and you can’t stop love
No you can’t fence time, and you can’t stop love—

And I couldn’t find much difference between this song and its simple lyrics and raw musical power anymore than

I was riding down the road one day and
Someone hit a possum
I was riding down the road one day and
Someone hit a possum
The road was his end
His end was the road
So they say

Whoa possum…
possum, possum…

I’ve always thought that Atlantic records always attempted to sell Phish in the wrong markets. A decent percentage of their songbook is similar to the music that I’m hearing coming out of this hard rocking country station. Just don’t know whether their fanbase would necessarily be happy sharing concerts with cowboy hat wearing good ole boys and girls.

I really like that disc! And my wife enjoys it too. She thinks Mike sounds like They Might Be Giants.

I’ve never listened to Tom Waits before, but I really like this album. Any Tom Waits fans have some recommendations for some of his music I should check out?

If you like that album, check out Bone Machine.

For a completely different sound, Closing Time, Nighthawks at the Diner.

For a mix of those two, Rain Dogs, and Heartattack and Vine.

^ Thanks man, I’ll definitely check those out

Allman Brothers Band from 5.24.2009.

Jesus, Derek Trucks has to be one of the greatest guitarists ever. I’d rank him better than Warren. Straight up.

Bought these today:

And rented these from ye olde library:

yonder mountain from All Good this year…late night bluegrass is amazing

I’m in big trouble if I don’t get the CD player in my car fixed soon. I’m getting hooked on C&W because the only half way decent FM station in the morning is “country thunder”. Listened to a Toby Keith song this morning and found myself liking the composition, arrangement and execution. Don’t have to tell you the title… but recognize I may be in trouble. May have to watch the CMA this week :unamused:

I’m gonna get my drink on
I’m gonna hear me a sad song
My baby just left home
I didn’t treat her right
Right here’s where I belong
I’m gonna stay 'till the money’s gone
If it takes me all night long
I’m gonna get my drink on.

Well I got some little problems
And the only way to solve ‘em
Is the sure-fire way I know
And when the going gets tough,
Well the tough get goin’
To the little bar down the road.

There’s a cold barstool
For a hot-headed fool
And I’m gonna hop right to it
Or a seat a table
With a jug of black label

Well Jo the bartender
She’s a mighty good friender
And she likes my company
When she says “last call for alcohol”
That won’t apply much to me.

I’m gonna get my drink on
I’m gonna hear me a sad song
My baby just left home
I didn’t treat her right
Right here’s where I belong
I’m gonna stay 'till the money’s gone
If it takes me all night long
I’m gonna get my drink on.

^ You need to find the real country, and it isn’t on the radio in most cities/states.
