What ELSE are you listening to now?

Wilco - Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway (again)

From Summerteeth…got this on sunday…lovin’ it but it’s very different to YHF which I may just be more partial to…

I definitely like Wilco’s later stuff better. IMHO Summerteeth is very good but overproduced, while Being There is a double album which averages out to good. Lately I actually prefer A Ghost Is Born to YHF.

WILCO was at Purdue about a month ago. From what I heard, the place was only about half full. And the show got plenty of pre-show hype.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard any of WILCO’s stuff.

Summerteeth is all I have, and I like it.

It drags to me, as an album, but it’s nice.

I’ve seen Wilco a couple times, and they are good at what they do, but it is just not for me.

Too scripted and boring.

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer: Brain Salad Surgery…shit is sick as it gets

^funnily enough I saw a talk by Billy Bragg at the Cheltenham Literature Festival - he described the Wilco collaboration as one of his favourites!

I havent been on a Dead kick in a while. But lately Ive been obsessed with acoustic Garcia. I got this Disc of Jerry and John Kahn from Oregon state prison. The sound quality is great and the songplaying is just outstanding.

Pink Floyd 6/18/75 Set 1. Started the show with a song they called “Raving and Drooling” which was the earlier version of Sheep from the Animals CD. Followed it with a song they called “You Gotta Be Crazy” which was the earlier version of Dogs. Interesting to listen to songs in development. Reminded me of early Phish song development.

^that sounds pretty cool… how are Floyd tapes? My dad said they were overwhelmingly loud live, so I figured that the tapes would be a tad lacking from being overpowered.

the one boot that I have was typical for a dat, including people talking during the new songs they didn’t know.

saw PF twice during that time period and they weren’t any louder than most electronic groups, certainly not louder than New Riders of The Purple Sage, the loudest concert I’ve ever heard. Sound of the pedal steel guitar hurt the ears very badly, and I sat with my hands over my ears most of the night to protect them.

What was coolest about PF, especially during the DSOTM period, were the speakers set behind the audience (when the venue allowed). The “maniacal voice” could be heard coming from the “back of your head” so to speak. PF developed a lot of live sound effects techniques, as it was their niche during the London psychedelic “rave” days of the mid to late 60s.

PM me Ax if you’d like a copy of this show. This goes for anyone else as well.

Lately I’ve been running through my whole CD collection (yes, Will, I actually buy CDs!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ) and putting everything on my iTunes that I had taken off over the years to make room. Some ‘forgotten’ gems:

Blur- 13: I realize Parklife is their definitive album for many people, but after the album ‘The Great Escape’ the band completely switched their gears, getting more experimental, and recording music that had more in common with American indie rock than anything British. After their self titled album which saw them hitting big in the States with the ‘Song 2’ single, the band recorded ‘13’, which kept the same direction but added electronics. I got sick of this album about a year ago, but when I dug it out just now I forgot how much I loved it. It drags a bit toward the end, but for such a long album there’s very little filler.

Dismemberment Plan- Emergency & I: This album got hyped to living hell by Pitchfork back in 1999. I really wanted to love it, but I found myself instead merely liking it. It’s a bit better than I remember, but it’s definitely one of those albums that has about 6 or 7 amazing songs that account for its hype alongside 5 or 6 that are good but not great.

Sigur Ros- (): I know, I know. I made a bunch of comments in another thread about how I think this album is boring, at least insofar as it’s overlong and the first four songs are the best. But after I made those comments, I dug the album back out to see if I’d feel any differently. Well, I don’t, but it’s still a good album in its own way. If they had released this as a double album I might even feel differently about it, but as it stands, it’s a frustratingly long and dense work with a handful of gems tucked away inside its glacial sprawl.

To Rococo Rot & I-Sound- Music Is A Hungry Ghost: I completely forgot I owned this album. It’s kind of like a meeting point between ambient techno and post-rock, leaning more toward the former. It’s nothing I’d called essential or great for either genre, but it’s got some cool tracks.

I’ve been listening to Miles Davis all day - I was out this weekend and saw a boxed set I would really like to have, so today I used my work computer to download some and listen. What, am I actually supposed to work at work?

Love - The Daily Planet

Awesome song from a classic album. This song gives me a bit of a Led Zeppelin vibe, especially from the drums and the ‘mystic’ acoustic guitar…

I always want to post more in this thread because I have a huge record collection and it has some amazing stuff in it, but all I listen to is Phish. I try to think “what did I listen to last night?” Phish, “What abotu the night before?” Phish…“What am I going to listen to tonight?” more Phish probably…

I guess that’s why this thread is like half the size of the “What show are you listening to now” thread.

Heheh…I’m now on Tom Waits - Sins of My Father from Real Gone…

Does anyone have his latest…it’s been getting top reviews lately…

the past few months i haven’t been able to get enough of Sam Cooke’s “Twistin’ The Night Away”

it’s the song i envision being played while the world is ending

Been listening to Raq’s new album Ton These. I got it and their last one Carbohydrates a month or two ago and I love’em both.

I’ve actually been listening to Painful by Yo La Tengo and Summerteeth by Wilco.

ha.

But i’ve truly fallen in love with that Wilco album. That line “the ashtray says you’ve been up all night” gets me every time for some reason.

Catfish Haven- Tell Me
Chin Up Chin Up- This Harness Can’t Ride Anything
The Hold Steady- Boys and Girls In America (still)
The Oohlas- Best Stop Pop

The First two are bands I have been working with lately. I booked CHin Up Chin up for a 5 date tour and they RIPPED IT UP. They Play agressive and melodic indie rock that is slightly mathy and a little angular. Very good stuff. Catfish Haven are playing for me on the 18th, and they are probably the one indie rock band that I think all you guys would go nuts for. They kind of sound like if Otis Redding fronted an indie rock band. If any of you Chicago cats want to see a good show, let me know!
