Listening to Metallica’s Kill 'Em All album in the car … Prince’s Around the World In A Day was played over the weekend … Ringo’s Sentimental Journey LP got a spin too. I put in a mix of some old Genesis, which my friend made for me, and which I still can’t get into that much.
You know how sometimes no music seems to hit the spot? I feel the opposite lately, really digging the stuff I’ve been listening to. I just downloaded three Phish shows I’ve never heard (courtesy willbreathes & marco; thanks dudes), and I can’t wait to hear 'em. Sometimes I’m just burnt out on music altogether, but not today.
It could have something to do with the office radio playing stuff like Backstreet Boys, and that kind of contrast will always put things in perspective.

threw in Ween’s The Mollusk a couple days ago and realized i’ve had a goddamn goldmine of musical awesomness, as of yet unheard, right under my nose for several years now. i have seen the light, though the light is dark, strange and frightening in the best possible way. i proceeded to violently punch myself in the face several times as punishment for my unacceptable ignorance, and after, when i was done, i immediately purchaced:
12 Golden Country Greats
Chocolate and Cheese
White Pepper
thank you God or Satan for finally showing me.

YES YES YES. Don’t fight it…taste the waste!
^I think Devin and some Ween fans overrate them a bit, but I still like their idea of a rock show, and they have a bunch of great songs.
I’m going to see them in St. Paul on July 19, right before 10k.
you mean you can see them…LIVE???
t’wats it like?
ridiculous, for the most part
in a good way of course
The lightning on this recording is SCARY!! Almost hit me I swear it!

The show was shut down, as a major thunderstorm rolled through ending Levon Helm’s
set after just 5 songs. I put on a couple of extra tracks, so you can hear the magnatude
of the thunder and lightning storm. The banter between Jeff and I, is quite comical now
that I look back, but it was scary at the time!
A pretty short set considering it’s Umphrey’s and Bonnaroo. Nice sound quality.

Dude, you got that on vinyl?
What’s funny about that to me is, I have the two original LPs … and I was considering getting the new set so I could have it on CD. And then you go and buy the record. Okay, so it’s not really that funny.
But that’s some sweet music.
My favorite Wilbury’s song. Sorry Roy, it’s off the second album
okay…okay…
after thouroughly digesting the Mollusk and overplaying it to the point of near monotony (can’t help it. those songs are just so fucking genius), i took a long drive today with the sole purpose of listening to White Pepper. i didn’t dare think it could possibly stand up to the original mind blowing of the Mollusk. ummmmmm wow. it got three full spins. how is having that level of creativity even possible? of course, every single song on it is stupid-good, but there are a few standout tracks (upon first listen) that are of a calibre all thier own:
Flutes of Chi
Even if You Don’t
Stay Forever
Falling Out
i really love Ween’s sense of the absurd and their completely original ways of stringing words together, but the songs above represent something even better to me somehow. they are more serious in nature and aren’t really there to get a laugh out of you. they are simply beautiful, powerful songs with amazing hooks. i’m a real sucker for a good hook.
i feel the same way right now that i did when i was opened up to Phish. it’s a sense of entering a whole new musical world where there are no boundries and many, many suprises in store. i’m sure i’m going overboard here, but currently my mind is completely blown.
i agree with everything you said aside from the simple fact that the songs you listed are on White Pepper, and not The Mollusk.
^ However, if you read his post, you would see he was talking about listening to White Pepper after listening to the Mollusk non-stop. So, yeah…he’s dead on. White Pepper is the shit. Have you got Quebec and La Cucaracha yet CJ?
nope. not yet. you know i will though.
12 Golden Country Greats is 10 songs of pure golden country greatness as well. it’s suprisingly racist/homophobic for a contemporary band, but i get that it’s all satire and toungue-in-cheek. still, as much as i love the arrangements and the authentic vintage honest-to-gosh classic country vibe, it’s a little…gross. or something. i dunno. mr. richard smoker is a FUCKED song. i guess i’ll just roll up my window as i’m blasting it at stoplights.
i have yet to crack into chocolate and cheese. soon, soon…
12 Golden Country greats did originally have 12 songs, and one, So Long Jerry, you can find Gener performing solo on youtube. (This is probably the best version you can find on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYhRfl9h41k ) It is one of the most touching songs that Ween ever wrote. A cookie goes to whoever can tell me what the 12th song was.
A little other piece of trivia is that Powder Blue orignally ended with a long Mohammed Ali speech, which added probably another 1 1/2 minutes onto the song.
That is a really tight Nashville group they have playing on that album, and, despite it’s irreverent and sometimes “gross” humor, it is one of the best country albums of the '90’s in terms of overall playing and songwriting.
Also, for the record, I think my favorite Ween song ever, at least post-'93, is probably Fluffy. They can stretch that out into 20 minutes of epic greatness on a good night. That was actually the last song I saw Ween play…so far…and I was literally crying, just thinking about my little furry buddy back at home.
wow, i must have been drunker than i thought last night. i have a distinct memory of reading his post twice to make sure i wasn’t going to say anything incorrect.
i’ll go sit in the corner.
I’ve been getting into my Air CDs again. It’s great to mellow out to that stuff. Moon Safari is a fantastic album…I wish those dudes would tour around here sometime.
