What ELSE are you listening to now?

Perico’s tone, Turner’s range and Kurt Rosenwinkel’s runs make this disc sound amazing when BLASTED loud.

Mark Turner gigs and records with Kurt Rosenwinkel often, and their stuff is earth- shattering, but here I have to say I am enthralled with Perico Sambeat’s solos…in may because he is the leader, but his solos always leave a stamp. Rosenwinkel fits in great with the ensemble big band sound and the trumpet player (?) is just as talented…goes well with alcohol/beer. recomended.

This is Prince’s latest studio album, Planet Earth. To me, it’s much the same as his previous two efforts, Musicology & 3121. It’s fine, but not very edgy or anything. A solid efort I guess. I don’t know what the haters are talking about; I guess some folks really don’t dig this release, going by what I’ve gathered from my few visits to prince.org. like, it seemed as if they like 3121 but hate Planet Earth. To me the only difference is that Planet Earth sounds like a bad mastering job … distorted and compressed too hard or something.

This, now, … this is my new CD. I’ve just printed a new draft of the artwork, and I have the audio almost totally wrapped as well. It’ll be out mid-July as near as I can figure it, and I just tonight added two songs from it to my myspace page, which of course you’ll be happy to have visited, once you have.

Now it would be a LOT cooler if hose would put Prince on his new album. Prince on your album = win. That cover looks nice, though…who is that?

Stevo

^Thanks, Stevo - that’s my drawing of myself, which was a horrible drawing until my computer had its way with it. Used the software’s ‘contours’ feature.

Wait, were you just asking me whose image that is on the cover of my solo album? … ?

^Ummm…yes…the cute little Jesus pic on your Visit album. Apparently you were Jesus and none of us knew. Looks real good. I can just draw cartoon characters and amoebas.

Stevo

Sorry for the confusion, yeah. Totally lookin’ like Jesus lately.

Listened to some of Metallica’s S&M, and the first half of ReLoad. After having totally given up on these guys around 1992 or something (even though I did enjoy the ‘black album’), I finally got curious enough to lend an ear to this later stuff.

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer

Sweet. When I grew a beard people told me I looked like Peter Forsberg…so I got that going for me.

Actually I don’t think the Load albums are that bad at all. It’s just that they’re a lil less heavy than the classic Metallica (which people should have seen coming with the Black album) but the albums aren’t that bad really. I actually like the slower songs like Hero of the Day and Bleeding Me. Also check out “Low Man’s Lyric” from Reload…it’s another slow one but it’s one of my favorites from that album.

S&M is okay, but it’s sadly apparent that they just aren’t able to play the music the way they used to. Like if you listen to the drums on the studio version of One and then the live album, it’s not even close…which is a bummer to me cuz the drums are one of my favorite parts of any Metallica song. I

Just picked this up, so far it doesn’t seem to quite measure up to their first two releases.

Still good though.

Edit: sorry, i should mention that this is Ratatat’s newest release: LP3

i’ve been looking forward to hearing this. i still need to revisit their second release…

i love their first. El Pico and Seventeen Years are two of my favorite songs of all time.

I might have to adjust my opinion on LP3 now; upon a stoned listening (which is currently underway), I feel that listening to this album high is more rewarding than listening to either Ratatat or Classics stoned. I still like Ratatat Remixes Vol 1 & 2 better than any of them though.

what did you think, Will??

Pretty good, pretty neat.

Nothing amazing.

I’ve been trying to slowly and tentatively listen to the reputedly awful St. Anger album by Metallica.

And today at work, in keeping with that theme of annoyingly over-compressed painfully loud hard rock CDs from old men, I’ve got the following lined up:

Rush: Vapor Trails

Queensryche: Operation:Mindcrime II

ZZ Top: Mescalero

Mindcrime II’s wrapping up now. This has been quite a satisfying experiment. Partly because I have to have the music pretty quiet at work, so it kinda negates the whole way-too-freakin-loud-on-the-compression-there-buddy factor.

Just stop. Don’t bother. Seriously, it’s almost like before this album, Metallica got together and said “Hey guys! I know we’ve got some good talent and can play some unique stuff that no one else does but for this album let’s just try to sound like every horrible metal act that’s already out there.” It’s HORRIBLE. I listened to it once, turned it off 2/3 of the way through and I will likely never listen to it again. Even worse I know a number of Metallica fans and not a SINGLE one likes this album…one said he tossed it right out of the window of his car into someone’s truck flatbed. Good times.
