What Phish Album Are You Listening To & Why?

I listened to Joy all the way through this afternoon (minus TTE, shut yer faces).

I must say, I enjoyed it. It didn’t blow me away or anything, and it didn’t automatically vault to #1 in terms of my favorite Phish studio albums (not in top-3…yet?), but I liked it a lot.

I listened to it through headphones, so maybe I’ll crank it up in my apartment. That might change a few things.

i’m not gonna lie, Joy is definately a ‘meh’ phish album to my ears. it has it’s moments, but lacks that ever elusive FLOW that vaults a studio album up into legendary status. it’s okay though, i wasn’t expecting the next Rift. for what it is, which is a happy, positive ‘were back!’ type of thing, it’s fine.

are you guys just streaming it? or did you download it?

I like it a lot.

Favorites at this point in time (and in order, ya heard!)

Backwards
KDF
Sugar Shack

the rest.

Maybe the freshness has worn off on me, but Ocelot and Stealing Time have really lost it for me.

jesus i’m dumb sometimes.

we all know what happens when you think you don’t like a Phish album after 2 listens.

Joy is…a fucking PHISH album. thank you, Phish. i’m remembering.

Billy Breathes. Now, there’s some pretty fuckin’ obscure overdubs on that album. For example, listen to Chatacter Zero. Now, at the end with all the backing vocals, listen way in the background and you can hear one that is really high pitched . My guess is Mike.
Also, once Waste starts to fade, to could hear what sounds like a bonjo and a mandolin starting to play along with the solo.

I got Rift goin. The lyrics feel good to me right now on this album, and from a songwriting & compositional POV it’s just undeniably some of their best work. Imagine this on double vinyl. Do it.

With a gigantic f***in deluxe gatefold record cover. Let’s go JEMP records.

edit i love ^that Ronald McDonald ‘what the shit?’ avatar, man.

The Siket Disc…Because it’s just that good…I feel like the song “Insects” today…

“It’s one of the only instances I can remember when we regularly played our own music.”----Mike Gordon talking about how The Siket Disc became a fixture in the band’s late night tour bus music rotation in early 2000…

I just listened to Billy Breathes, and enjoyed it very much, thank you. I really have to be in the mood for this one, and I’m glad I saved it for when I was.

The acoustic set from 8 reminds me a lot of the Clifford Ball acoustic mini-set, and this album was the new stuff at that time. I think they did Waste, Talk, Train Song, Strange Design, something like that at Acoustic Clifford Ball.

You’re welcome.

Party Time

Just bought Rift. AMAZING!!!

I unexpectedly recieved Round Room and Undermind. Good stuff. Different from the early stuff I’ve been listening to, but good. Pebbles and Marbles alone was enough to make me give 2.0 more credit than ever did before.

Attention all fans of music everywhere, even if you’re dead: YOU MUST HEAR RIFT.

You’re not my Mom, you can’t tell me what to do!

I’m giving it its third or fourth spin right now. There are a bunch of songs on here that I’m appreciating more in studio form than I did hearing them in show recordings. Mound for one, The Wedge for another. And Weigh!

parrty time and because i haven’t heard it all the way through yet.

A Picture of Nectar . . .simply because I can never truly get enough of Glide.

NEVER!

Listened to Story of the Ghost the other day, the studio version of Guyute is suprisingly good.

Listened to Joy last night with my mom while we driving to dinner/drinks.

She loves Phish, “until they get all crazy… like, do you need acid whenever you listen to this?” (well, this comment was made while listening to the Cinci Rock&Roll, so I switched it to the Joy album.

I chuckled and said “not always”.

In keeping with the studio album theme… listened to Rift this morning. Been a year or more since I did, and it is such a perfect piece of studio mastery.

And currently listening to Glide on A Picture of Nectar. This drumming can’t be beat.
