As if to spite the trickle of '95 shows on Live Phish lately, I’ve been digging back into post hiatus. I downloaded 5 shows about a month ago and haven’t given them all a substantial listening period yet. I quite like shows like this, though, that are surrounded by shows others would much prefer–in this case, a fan favorite “instant classic” (7/29) and an old school flavored setlist extravaganza (7/31). However, 7/30 tickles my fancy for its sheer “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.” It’s the sort of show that has no flow or sense of energy building to an inevitable conclusion. Instead, there’s a bit of everything.

Like 7/29, there’s a fair amount of rarities, including a debut of ‘You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.’ However, I naturally like the show for the jams, of which the show offers a 30 minute Scents workout, an experimental but not-as-long-or-good-as-IT Chalkdust Torture, and a second set opening rollercoaster ride of Twist. Oh, and a solid YEM. To be quite honest I don’t think any of these jams are ‘best of’ fodder in my book, but they make the show unique and worth listening to a few times, doubly so given the juxtaposition of the other songs.

::shakes fist::

Damn yous '95s!!!

But for real… I am listening to some '97.

From Dublin.

I think Mike is shaking the Blarney Stone with his bombs.

10-21-89 The Front, Burlington, VT

1: Fee, Ya Mar, In a Hole, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters-> Fluffhead Jam-> Foam, AC/DC Bag, Lizards, Dog Log, David Bowie

2: Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Suzy Greenberg > Wilson, Possum, Reba, The Sloth, If I Only Had a Brain, Frankenstein, You Enjoy Myself, Highway to Hell

I used to have a tape of this (set 1 and Mike’s groove), but it eventually broke, as it was always in the car rotation. I was excited to get it when Shnfamily did their project '80’s but alas, it did not come. However, it recently surfaced, and for this I am happy. This copy is a little rougher than I remember, but still listenable. I think the Bowie is a standout from the time, though I don’t have much to compare it to. Everything though is a very solid. Check out one of the rare versions of ‘In A Hole’ too!

^i think the lot threw that up in the uncirculated show thread or something the other day

in the seasonal mood today so i figured the island tour would be a great choice so it is

04-02-98 Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale (Long Island), NY

2: Punch You in the Eye, Simple, Birds of a Feather**, Wolfman’s Brother > Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley > Frankie Says*** > Twist+, Sleeping Monkey, Rocky Top

E: Guyute

*Unfinished - middle jam extended, into Horn. **First time played (original). ***First time played (original); with Mind Left Body intro jam. +With a crazy “aliens-are-coming” jam.

gotta luv a tube opener & the entire show, i just luv me some island tour

That Twist jam may be better than the Roses jam on the next night!

But it probably falls just short, imo.

I just popped in the bonus disc that came with the Brooklyn DVD. All I can say is there ain’t nothing wrong with this Tweezer. This whole disc is pretty damn sweet, maybe even better than the DVD as an overall release…nah…but it’s good.

Its funny you mention this show. I’ve busted back into my '03 binder that I’ve had stashed at my parents house this week, and, as of right now, I am of the opinion that this show is probably the coolest show they did post-hiatus. Its so damn unique, and I agree with the “throw it against the wall and see what sticks” sentiment.

The first set is anchored by the 30 minute SASS, which is an interesting jam, very typical of summer '03 jamming–it sums up summer ‘03 nicely for me. But everything else in the set seems to fit so well to me. My Friend opener, although not played perfectly, is such a cool beginning to a show. The last MFMF :’(

Fishman has always liked Lonesome Cowboy Bill, even though he forgets to sing the first verse right away.

You Ain’t Goin Nowhere–Perfect! What a great song. Nice cool down after the monster jam.

Spock’s Brain–sick. Mike’s bass part gives me chills. I find this song fascinating.

Chalkdust–unique, non-standard version that really rips. Jedi Trey at his best.

On Your Way Down–HUGE bustout. Lounge-singing page gets a chance to sing some bluesy lines, and I love it. I wish Phish would’ve done a little more with this genre, since Page’s voice is so perfect for it.

FEFY–>Taste=beautiful close to the set. Taste as a set closer might urk some people, but I like it a lot. It has nice “finality,” whatever that means.

Overall, I just can’t see a weakness in this show, and that’s why its recently catapulted up my list of post-hiatus favorites. The jamming is tight and energetic, the song selection is full of well-played rarities and solid versions of classics. The Secret Smile encore is OK with me. Every encore can’t be a raging one–sometimes a cool down is a nice way to end the show (i.e. 6.19.04), and rumor has it the band found out about a crew member or friend who had died on his way to IT when they walked off stage after set 2.

2: Birds of a Feather > Also Sprach Zarathustra* > Brother^, Ghost^^ -> Lizards, David Bowie

*Unfinished (only one “verse”). ^After the song, Trey said, “we’re going to play that again”, and they played a one-minute instrumental version of “Brother”. Then Trey said, roughly, “That was the single-edit radio-friendly version. This next song is radio-unfriendly; it’s long and slow.” ^^With tease/jam of “I Can’t Turn You Loose” (originally by Otis Redding, but associated with The Blues Brothers; see also 12-29-97)

^that 2001 had my non-phish friends dancing around like fools a weekend or two ago. Good stuff.

Whoa. Can’t believe I’ve never heard that one. That setlist just makes me smile. :slight_smile:

Usually I’ll stream LP at work, but today I don’t feel like doing that. I think this afternoon I’ll listen to both shows of the '97 Hampton run. Yeah.
