What show are you listening to right now?

Great Went - Day 1
8-16-97

Saw the Went newly upped on etree and downloaded for a HD copy. Hadn’t been listening to much Phish these days, but dug out my old CD’s and gave this show a spin. Shortly into the second set, I realized (again) why I listen … and third set … again. Now I’ve listened to the Halley’s > Cities > Llama about 10x!

Listened to the Went DwD today on the highway. One of my favorite Phish jams ever.

Completely mesmerizing.

^That’s one of my most memorable Phish sets ever. That entire day was great. Actually I think it’s maybe their best-sounding festival. Clifford Ball was great, but The Great Went was more far-out and exciting, musically. IMO.

a

Listened to the first set of Coventry (day one) for the first time (in a very sporadic fashion; took me like a week actually!).

I understand that it’s gonna get worse, but I found it to be a fairly good set. Expecting the worst, I was pleasantly surprised. I even thought Run Like an Antelope was a very good version. Looking at the list though, I don’t have a solid memory of YEM or Sample. Can’t remember if they were all flubbed up. It’s like I blacked out. That’s how f*cked up everything was at Coventry: I wasn’t even THERE and parts of the weekend are all fuzzy.

Set I
Walls of the Cave -> Runaway Jim -> Gotta Jibboo, You Enjoy Myself, Sample in a Jar, Axilla, Poor Heart, Run Like an Antelope*, Fire

I’ve got set II of 11/21/98 playing.

Love that “Simple!”

7/24/93.

Again.

I tend to gloss over this show for whatever reason, but I now think set 1 is one of my very favorite set 1’s, maybe ever.

Mango Song almost made me cry it was so great.

Again.

I might have to start an ‘open letter to Trey’ thread, where I tell him that: because songs like Divided Sky and Squirming Coil are so so perfectly good and cool and great, he’s raised the bar so dang high that many other artists I USED TO enjoy now sound like sh!t by comparison. Thanks a lot for ruining music, Trey.

Show Notes: This show saw the first Mango Song since May 17, 1992 (148 shows).

Is that the show with the Nellie Kane teases in Divided Sky?

If so, that show is great!

If not, I need to listen to that show!

Nellie Kane is the song right before DS, but I didn’t notice any Nellie Kane teases. Actually I couldn’t hear Trey very well during most of the jam.

^ i took my younger brothers to see their 1st show on that night! it was weird to go from stowe, which had 5,000 people, to a sold out show at great woods 2 days later with 15,000 people! :o the largest attended show at that point. this is when i realized phish was going to be huge!

8-9-93!

I think there were like 20 newbies that I knew at that Great Woods show. I didn’t bring all of ‘em, but I was definately indirectly responsible for their attendance. And I want a f*ckin’ medal.

i think 60% of my high school saw their 1st show that night! great woods was always like a high school reunion for me.

Oh you!

Listening to two shows … one is Coventry day one, currently on “David Bowie” … listening now. This performance marks the first seriously bad display of Coventry, IMO. Until now I’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about.

Now, the part that’s botched is some seriously difficult music to play. The rest of it is only sorta botchy in places, but not really butchered. I still find it way more listenable than I expected it to be overall.

Is this gonna be like when my kids were babies, and I’d say how I thought it was cool being a parent, and even sort of easier than expected, and invevitably, seasoned parents would always reply, “Oh you just wait!” ??

Actually I did hear Coventry’s “Curtain With” once on LivePhish … that was certainly horrendous, more than that botched Bowie section.

Short show, but typical of '92 .. focused high-energy playing and a great setlist.

I got to attend this show. Have it playing in the car right now, currently on Uncle Pen.

This Ghost–>YaMar has been a great way to wake up. This is definitely one of the best shows of '97 imo. It be hard for me to keep it out of my top 5. Easily the best YEM of the summer.

Jerry and the Dead had played many a time at Shoreline, and Jerry’s birthday was the next day (teases of “Happy Birthday” and “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking?” at the end).

Forgot how good this Maze is!!

First sets that roll off the tongue like this are so very nice.
