What show are you listening to right now?

A show with Esther is just fine by me!

thelot, how can you say 8.9 is sloppy and 7.28 is not?

haha that’s unpossible!

They slopped through most of those bustouts on 7.28

Right.
The difference is that they were kickin’ it down in KS and VA Beach was all shit that they had played before sans encore.
They shouldn’t be sloppin’ it up for shit that they had been playing ALL tour.
a

I’m confused.

Regarding 7/28: the fact that they were playing a bunch of kick downs offsets the sloppiness?

And then on 8/9, the sloppiness is called out because they had already played the songs (which I can see your point).

Correct.
Is 11-02-98 considered epic?
Yes.
Is DSOTM sloppy as hell.
Yes.
Still a good show?
Yes.

The opening trio of 1998-11-02 makes up for any faults.

This brings up quite the conundrum:

Does one prefer bustouts/kickdowns regardless of how they’re played (sloppy, missing a verse, etc.)?

Or would one rather prefer tightly played Phish staples and no bustouts?

yeah, I understand that point. (aug’s point about sloppiness and bustouts)

I’ve never considered 8.9 particularly sloppy, but I suppose I’ve only listened a few times, and looking at the middle of that second set, I can feel the let-down without even listening.

Personally, some of my favorite shows have really boring setlists on paper but are played really well.
The first set of 07-28-1998 is not very sloppy, btw.

Take Vegas 'oo, for example…
09-29-2000 is a Top 5 attended for me.
It includes major kickdowns like Spock’s and D & M plus the Kid Rock appearance, but the entire show is TIGHT as hell.
09-30-2000 is probably in the bottom ten for me even though it had MANY more kicks, they were just sloppy all night.
On paper, 09-30 trumps 09-29, but for me, I’m all about solid playing.

Also, I don’t think 08-09-1998 is sloppy enough where it kills the show, but the lack of flow and setlist selection really kill it for me.

ahh nothing like some Phish food & 12/11/97 Waste solo. Possibly the most beautiful performance Phish ever did, that Waste. The piano & guitar solos, Mike, Fish, I mean it’s flawless, a thing of absolute beauty.

^meh. If a Waste jam is the best thing Phish ever did, well, then you haven’t heard enough Phish.

Or that may be just personal preference and opinion.

In that case, nevermind.

^then again you are “post hiatus guy” and if post hiatus jams are the best jams phish ever did then you havent heard enough phish. so there.

you are misled

I don’t think that at all, it is only a reference to my noobittity in terms of when I saw the band

I’m downloading again! Its been too long.

Picked up some much needed fall '96 to add to my collection. Downloading a Ween show from WEdnesday night right now.
