A Personal Phistory:
I was in a record store in '95 and bought A Live One on a whim. I 'd never heard their music but heard of Phish. Great first album to listen to because it captured the band’s live energy. I moved out west for college and kind of forgot about Phish for a little while and they didn’t play near my school the whole time. I decided I had to see them live the next time our paths crossed, which ended up being New Years in Boston when I was home visiting for xmas. First shows tend to be one of your favorites, and NYE '96 might still be my favorite Phish show. The band started with Axilla and I was a little confused because I hadn’t heard it before and it seemed like a little too much too soon for me (I still don’t care for Axilla much- this insane rocking intro may have scarred me for life…). Then they play “Peaches”- again another song I was unfamiliar with- at least coming from Phish, but it ROCKED. That’s when it clicked and I entered a state of bliss that lasted quite a long time. Cue the bass intro to PYITE. My chest was about to explode and I really got into the music from then until the end of three great sets and a very epic Queen song, although Page couldn’t come close to hitting the high notes like Freddie Mercury (who can?). The choir was a surprise and they did Bohemian Rhapsody along with Julius, & Amazing Grace together. I think their mikes were off or something because I had a hard time hearing them over the band. I saved one of the balloons with the Phish logo on it that had dropped from the ceiling at midnight and I brought it all the way home- fully inflated- and it stayed full of “Phish air” for a few years! All in all, my Greatest New Year’s…ever.
