Who is the ACTA???

My buddy just sent this to me via e-mail and it kinda made me think (not in a good way either)

Could you imagine an Internet World were you had a 3-Strike Policy concerning Piracy of any form that would lead to a LIFETIME BAN from the Internet for doing something as harmless as DL’ing a copy written JPG?

This is the ACTA:
Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) A treaty (which means it circumvents the constitution) between several countries and spear headed by big business to put a stop to all internet piracy by holding internet providers responsible for the content uploaded and download by customers so if we pirate the internet company gets busted for it, this forces internet companies to monitor every bit of data its customers send and receive.

Further more if a person is simply accused of internet piracy three times your internet is turned off for good with out a judge jury or trial even if you arent pirating anything and can/have prove this. they don’t care they just flip the switch and its internet out for good.

To add insult to injury these select governments are attempting to legalize the random search, copying, and seizure of computers and other devices that hold digital data when a person brings them to an airport. they want to take our laptops with out provocation or reason to copy search them and copy your entire hard drive in an attempt to find pirated material

SPREAD THIS AROUND, GET THE WORD OUT FOLKS

The Government-Big Business wants CONTROL OF THE INTERNET!!!

The Government-Big Business realize the Internet is not only in America, yes?

This would affect several Countries including US and Canada…

Look at China, India, Australia, North Korea, Most of the Middle East all have censorship and pirating control on their Internet…

The want to target US Internet Providers which is who will ban you from the Net if this passes…It wont be the Government pushing us around on the Net, it will be Big Business…

This is in it’s infancy but could be something to worry about down the line…

Who is the HMFIC?

But the IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, the group which is responsible for the global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources is located solely in America. So, in a sense, the Internet is controlled by America.

I have a hard time believing this. In fact, I don’t believe it at all. I think, assuming the treaty is legit, somebody is perhaps misreading it.

Your internet is “turned off”? WTF does that even mean? Is that a technical term? And even if you have proven yourself innocent? It would be extremely unlikely for the United States to enter a treaty in which it’s citizens could endure consequences beyond their control and with no recourse or appeals process. And what does “for good” mean? What if the internet is in my wife’s name or my roommate’s name? Will they “turn off” my roommates internet “for good” because I downloaded a copyrighted jpeg 3 times? I’m guessing they wouldn’t even know how to do that. It’s not like they ask for ID when you sign up for internet service.

I have a feeling something is a tad misleading here… but I will continue to research before I come to any conclusion.
