Who's doing lights on TAB tour?

I disagree. I mean, sure money has something to do with it-- the guy is a creative genius and deserves good pay-- not to mention the fact that a bigger budget means more toys to play with and, ultimately, more fun.

But I’m quite certain that, even from a music-to-lighting standpoint, a show like Bieber’s, Madonna’s, Gaga’s, Britney’s, etc… is not at all underwhelming for an LD. Orchestrated shows are often more fun and more challenging for an artist than improvisational ones-- especially when you have lit those particular improvisations a million times over 3 decades. Bieber has drum beats, guitar riffs, bass bombs and cymbal crashes just like any other music… he also has choreography and lots of spectacle on stage. If Kuroda is underwhelmed with the show, he’s not putting in any effort-- and I seriously doubt Kuroda would approach a job that way.

The audio on this vid is useless, you can’t hear the music so the whole music-to-lighting question will have to wait… but go ahead and mute your speakers and enjoy the spectacle…

That seems to be the “above the GA floor” lighting I saw at MSG plus some. Neat!

you keep saying this, but don’t you think CK5 can have exactly what he wants when he wants it to light Phish as he pleases? I really doubt that he is dying for new toys that he can’t have for Phish, but I’m not saying the budgets are comparable…but it’s kinda like saying just because Trey only uses one guitar on stage he doesn’t have the budget to be changing guitars between every song, right?

If CK5 wanted to use that rig with the hybrid laser/lights I’m sure he could for Phish…but that’s the main reason I see for his endeavor in this now- trying new lights that don’t work for a Phish show

Kuroda usually lights TAB shows, to answer Levi’s question. And selfishly, I think that’s where he belongs! And as far as running lights goes, doing them improvisationally (new word) is so much more fun!

Thanks, Glenn. That’s exactly what I was trying to express. Not sure how else to say it.

I was mainly talking in terms of budget, it sounds like this dispute has more to do with agreeing together…that’s why I came to the conclusion after watching that vid that he’s most likely doing Bieb’s lights to get to use things that wouldn’t work with Phish, so basically what you said is what I was getting at…being able to play with toys not because Phish can’t afford it or it isn’t in the budget, but because they wouldn’t work with Phish if for nothing else just what the fans are used to seeing

and L.E.D. lights? seems like I saw that somewhere this summer for a stint

I thought we were talking about TAB? When did Kuroda ever say he’d choose Bieber over Phish?

 dude what are you talking about? are you on the pot?

I just watched the Freaks and Geeks episode of Lindsay smoking for the first time, it was portrayed like an acid trip :unamused:

Read the thread man. We started talking about TAB budgets vs. Bieber budgets and lighting TAB shows vs. bieber shows and then all of a sudden you started talking about Phish budgets. Phish and TAB are not the same band and if the thread was “Who’s doing lights on Phish Tour” because Kuroda was ditching Phish for Bieber, I would be just a perplexed as you are. But the fact that Kuroda chose Bieber over TAB is not perplexing to me in the slightest.

It just troubles me that you give no credit to the man as an independent lighting designer (rather than just a 5th member of Phish) and disregard the fact that he might want to branch out. But it’s all good, dude. I get it. You love all things Phish and you think Bieber is stupid and you want to believe that Kuroda feels the same. Point taken.

And Freaks and Geeks is a fucking masterpiece, for the record.

I would consider this giving him credit as an individual lighting director

I guess I did turn this into Bieber vs. Phish, didn’t really realize that…what I really meant was I didn’t see much of a purpose for him to do this other than the money, at least before this thread was expanded on…it’s definitely not that I don’t want to give him credit as an individual in the lighting profession, it’s just not something I knew much about, didn’t really think about how much differently he could do the lights, watching that video made me realize this

essentially, before watching any videos or anything I just assumed he would be using a rig he was used to and comfortable with to light Bieber shows…now I understand better…to state the obvious, it’s the same with Trey doing his solo thing to do be able to play with horns

I’d rather see CK5 with MGB rather than TAB.

Sort of. But it’s also kind of assuming that everything Kuroda does must have some sort of ulterior motive that relates back to Phish, and I’m not sure that’s the case.

Anyways, I’m glad you understand my overall point. It has been a good discussion.

^^ jbfc, you know what I meant…if nothing else my point is even more proven, Chris admitted the LED lights were too much, can’t imagine how LED SCREENS would’ve gone over

^

I’d rather see MGB than TAB, period.

did you just tell me what point I was trying to make?

My point was if he wanted to do anything LED, it was proven failure this summer…glad he got to try it out if it’s something he’s been wanting to do though

Divided Sky tease by Bieber guitarist.

sorry, I didn’t realize how confusing this had gotten…it doesn’t matter enough to try to explain it anymore

I think Kuroda is doing it to play with toys and styles that wouldn’t work for Phish, either bc the band wouldn’t like it (impossible to know right now) or he himself doesn’t think it’s fitting for a band that doesn’t have much stage presence/action/what-have-you…but not simply because the band won’t throw him the loot to make it happen, like they can’t afford it

I sure hope Bieber isn’t the reason Phish isn’t doing a Fall Tour, selfishly of course

One has nothing to do with the other and that is pretty silly. Phish can and has played without CK5.
