even in the worst week of Phish there is going to be at least one show that is debateable. 6-28 is it but it is not good enough to make up for the week!
Even though it is only 3 shows, I’d say that 5-21 through 5-27 is the weakest of 2000.
i heard last week was pretty bad.
I’m with Greg. There’s too much Phish I haven’t heard to give a good answer.
This week, or last week…maybe next week.
This thread is week! ???
sorry
6-25-00 Walnut Creek Raleigh, NC
1: NICU, Sample in a Jar, The Old Home Place, Punch You in the Eye, Water in the Sky, Funky Bitch, Horn, Heavy Things, Dirt, Split Open and Melt (1:09)
2: Gotta Jibboo > Fast Enough for You > Scent of a Mule, Meat, Maze, What’s the Use > Slave to the Traffic Light (1:22)
E: Uncle Pen, Bold as Love
this is the most let down i think i’ve been at a show. maybe it was because i was tired from the previous three nights but i felt this show really wasn’t going anywhere. i felt like they knew it too and that’s why they played “what’s the use”. i haven’t heard tapes of this so maybe it was just my generally bad mood that day.
^I’ve never listened to that show, but it does look pretty weak on paper, especially the first set.
^ yeah, to make it even worse that was the last i saw them before the first hiatus.
i’m gonna try to find this one and give it another listen anyways.
2000 is definitely winning this thread. ;D
Only because we’ve ruled out all post-hiatus.
Here’s a crappy show from '97
08-08-97 The World Music Theatre, Tinley Park, IL
1: Cars Trucks Buses, Gumbo-> Lizards, Dirt, It’s Ice, Water in the Sky, Character Zero
2: Wolfman’s Brother-> Free, Limb By Limb, Loving Cup, Prince Caspian, Chalk Dust Torture
E: Hoochie Coochie Man*#, Messing With The Kid*^
*With Sugar Blue (blues artist) on vocals and harmonica. #A Willie Dixon cover. ^A Junior Wells cover.
Post hiatus should be in play for this, How bad did it get? (aside from the obvious)
I agree, someone comment on Vegas '04! Does it rival Coventry? Never heard it.
And I haven’t heard much 2003 either … my understanding, and correct me if I’m wrong, is that it’s like this:
IT>
Summer tour 2003>
Winter tour '03>
NYE run '03>
12-31-02
Hampton January>
Fall '03
I’d like to know how close that perception is, and also, what was the weakest week in '03?
I don’t think this weak week thread is weake.
If you took a percentage of highlights among overall shows (to level it out since they didn’t tour that much in 2004), 2004 has a much lower percentage than pre-hiatus. Same with 2003.
I’d say it would be about 10-20% for 2004, maybe 25% for 2003, as compared to close to 50% or more during 94-97.
I don’t know how much sense that makes, but I understand it, damnit.
I would argue that 2003 is at least as good as 2000, 1999, or 1998. Although I haven’t heard a ton of 2000 or 1999 and I found summer '98 underwhelming overall.
I’m very curious to hear Vegas '04 but I don’t want to spend the cash on it…
I dunno, couldn’t you just argue that starting in 1998 each subsequent year was worse (varying degrees) in terms of quality.
1999 was worse than 1998, in my opinion, 2000 was worse than 1999 (slightly), 2003 worse than 2000 (how much?), etc…
I was at the Vegas shows in '04, and they were lack-luster to say the least.
However, I don’t think that Vegas holds a candle to the clusterfuck that was Coventry. Although Trey’s voice was totally shot, they never had to restart a song and I’m fairly certain no tears were shed.
Also, the whole Meatstick fiasco in Vegas was pretty solid…underwhelming lighting at those shows though due to the absence of CK5.
This might have to be a bracket buster challenge…“Weaksauce, the quest for the worst ever show”
