Worst week of phish ever

^I just listened to Coventry and have this to say about it:

  1. I don’t hold the crying against them. Not to say that I want more crying in my Phish.

  2. They didn’t restart Curtain, which was what I thought happened before actually hearing it. Trey started the ‘With’ part on the wrong fret and the band attempted to follow him anyway, until they all realized it wasn’t gonna work … so they just backpedaled to that point, which is way way more understandable than starting ‘Curtain’ in the wrong key.

Still stinky, but when you hear what happens musically, it’s a relatively innocent mistake. Wedge & Glide on the other hand, that’s just nonsensically stupid playing.

Trey’s voice isn’t shot at Coventry … but that’s not to say he sang well either. His singing really flaked out starting in '98. Too bad, I always liked the Trey vocals before then.

Ideas were briefly kicked around for BracketBusters in terms of shows, tours, etc.

But it would be difficult b/c a lot of people on here haven’t heard every show from a tour, or even some popular shows themselves. There are plenty of Fall 1995 and August 1993 shows that I haven’t heard.

But I do think another BracketBuster is in order…

When referring to Trey’s voice being shot, I was referring to Vegas, because it sounded like he had bronchitis.

I would totally agree that I used to like Trey’s singing, but he really started to phone it in. After hearing his fall stuff from this year though, there is a glimmer of hope because he seems to be sounding better/caring more about his voice.

^Right, I understood that … I mean to say: that I find his voice intact at
Coventry, in my comparison of what I know of Coventry vs. your description
of Vegas. Unlike Vegas, his voice was not shot at Coventry, yet it didn’t
necessarily make for good singin’ either!

Vegas is 6 sets. Coventry is 6 sets.

Musically speaking, which is worse? Which has less highlights? Which has more? Or is it just general knowledge that Coventry is as bad as it gets?

IMO, Vegas is better than Coventry…if even just because there wasn’t that feeling that this is the end.

How’s the Vegas guitar playing?

To me, that’s what really kills the Coventry recordings. Trey’s vocals are horrible at Coventry, but they weren’t very good all year anyway. What sets Coventry apart (from a strictly musical standpoint) is the guitar playing.

If Vegas suffers more from laryngitis or bronchitis or whatever then that’s nowhere near the same thing. I just always assumed he must have botched lots of lyrics and guitar parts at Vegas for those shows to have their reputation.

To be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to the Vegas shows so I can’t really tell you one way or another. I can tell you that it wasn’t all sluggish, depressing blues riffs that dominated Coventry though. I will give them a once-over and get back to you.

Thanks Jeff … don’t feel obligated to do that or nothin’, I’ll probably hear it someday.

Funny how sometimes it’s compelling to hear them play badly. Other times I want to surround myself with piles of discs from the early '90s.

That week of December 15th, 2006 was a pretty low period for the boys. Damn…almost 2 years ago already.

See, I would argue that, improvisationally speaking, 1998 is weaker than '99, ‘00’ or '03. But whatever. That wasn’t the point of this thread…

So now when Phish starts playing again and people start complaining about the shows because they didn’t play their favorite song, we can look up this thread and see how hard it is to actually come up with concrete instances of a Phish actually sucking that bad.

The current tour is always the worst one ever, right?

I’m going to avoid reading reviews about the upcoming shows. At least until I listen to them first.

^
I have given some thought about how I will handle this “new Phish” as well.

There will be plenty of reviews posted here and other message boards, as well as phish.net. I want to avoid those like you. I think I’ll just download them within a few days and set aside some time where I can listen to the entire show at my leisure (at home rather than at work).

We all know the new shows are gunna be the worst, right?? Let’s just decide that ahead of time so we can skip all the fussin’ and the fightin’.

I fully expect Phish to descend from heaven on white stallions with tongues of fire and silver swords whenceforth they will smite all wrongdoers and decimate the nine headed dragon of Gorgoroth. Once all the evil ones stand judgement, and we reclaim this Earth as the paradise God intended, I imagine I will probably get laid (finally!). They will also open the first show with Alumni Blues. Anything short of this will be total bullshit because Trey is on crack. Fuck Phish.

^Silly. That’s the Beatles you’re thinking of.

Great post.

But I’m afraid it’ll be “Buried Alive!” my friend.

They will also play the Gamehenge saga in it’s entirety including Icculus, Mcgrupp, Llama, PYITE, and Harpua.

Free beer at the show, free doughnuts and coffee the morning after.

Don’t forget about the setbreak massage!
