this is one of the only phish studio albums i don’t own, and since they’re broken up, and released it just before they broke up, i didn’t find a need to buy it. now i’m rethinking buying it, what do you guys think of it? how does it compare to other albums…not talking about like junta or lawnboy, but more round room or farmhouse.
Well I should start off saying this is my opinion. Phish’s studio albums are usually hit or miss according to who is listening.
Comparing Undermind to Farmhouse and Round Room I would have to say it is sub-par. Nothing jumps out at you (i.e. Piper, Gotta Jibboo, Seven Below…), actually I should say nothing jumps out at me.
However, I would still say get it because it is a part of a band I (and I am guessing you) love. A few songs could have been the next big thing, I am mainly thinking Scents and Subtle Sounds, Army of One…
I agree with the above statement that Phish studio albums are hit or miss. For me, Undermind is a hit…in fact I will go as far as to say that I think it is one of their better studio albums. The production quality is excellent and there are a few gems that make the album worth purchasing. Song I Heard, Scents and Subtle Sounds, and Army of One (awesome work by Page.) I really like Access Me as well and it’s an example of typical Gordo humor. By far my favorite track is Grind, the acapella album closer. It would have been nice to see how these tunes matured in concert but unfortunately some of them were never played. Still, it is a good effort and worth the money.
Grind was played NYE 1998. Well technicaly it was the eve of 99. Anyway…
I think Undermind is worth picking up. It works completely as an album in the way that ‘Billy Breathes’ does, though no songs jump out at you as great.
no songs jump out as great? Pages Masterpiece - Army of One. Yeah that not only jumps it explodes out into the far reaches of the universe as great. I actually love this album. Beginning to end this album is great.

It was not quirky enough for my tastes, but it’s still worth checking out.
Yeah, I’d say so. Undermind is a ton of totally different song styles, so it always sounds… different.
I agree with Harpua…there’s really no songs that stand out as Phish’s best songs, but it seems to all work together as an albums…I just bought it on Saturday and have only listened to it all the way through once…
In my opinion, it is worth picking up for the DVD, and you can make up your own mind about the album.

i heard about it, and know what phish did around the album realease time, and i dont want much to do with it… and ill never pay real $$ for anything phish but i DEFINATLY wont pay $$ for this… maybe 7 years ago, but NOW… NEVER!!!
they can choke on this album… all 4 of them…
yeah, this is not a good album. it wasn’t so bad at first and then BAM… the connection came on. i actually threw the CD out of my window and never listened to it again.

actually, i hate the radio. even if someone did play a good song, they would play it too many times.
oh common the connection isnt that bad (althought pretty bad) and just think how unnnderrated “a song i heard the ocean sing” is… now common thats a good song there

anyone else hear parallels between the (live) jam out of s.a.s.s. and the standard build out of hood? it could have been the particular one i heard at alpine 2004 but the jam sounded exactly like the post “thank you mr. minor” segment of hood to my ears.
HIJACK - speaking of throwing shit out of a window. After my Junior prom I was supposed to attend a party with my date. So we get out and i pull up to the house and she said “Well I had a good time, I guess i will see you on monday.” So i was uninvited to the party more or less because it was her friend’s not mine. So while i was driving to another party I realized she left her purse in my car. I picked it up and threw it out the window.She never asked me for it … infact she never spoke to me again. End Hijack.
