I am in for the pre-charge. Of course, I love the jam too. But the pre-charge is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. Plus, I would say I only make it through 1 out of every 5 vocal jams, so I have to subtract for that. Tough call, though.
I voted for pre-charge because it shows that Trey is one of the most gifted composers ever … the composed part is just so beautiful, it always reminds me of classical music with all the different sections, tension and release etc.
I couldn’t make a decision - the entire song kicks ass from beginning to end. Sorry…
i have to go with the fukn funktastic post-charge…
i love the composed section, and it does vary slightly between shows (I’d say especially with the playing around the longer drawn out trey notes…i think i’ve heard some people call it ‘the note’) but for me the funky improv in YEM is my favorite kinda phish.
great choice for a poll though, i really had to think about it and the funk didn’t win by much…
Have to take Pre. not sure why. i did though. good idea for a poll, mean to actually make us pick.
i second gregs statement made above…if you want the composed section listen to junta.
Not gonna do it…
I generally like the jam best, followed closely by the composed section.
Oh, and I almost always skip the vocal jams.

I do too, sometimes. but not always. If i’ve heard it before and it doesn’t really go anywhere, then I’ll skip it.
Kinda have to be there for the vocal jam…
I love the vocal jams…that’s me…Listen to 10/31/95 and tell me you don’t love vocal jams…I don’t think you “have to be there”. No more than you do for any other type of jam at least…It is just one of those things that no other band does…so if you want to show your friends what a unique entity Phish is, one of the first things you show them is a YEM including the vocal jam of course.
Although yem is largely about the jam, i still think the composed part takes the cake, its just so goddamn comforting and beautiful
post charge by a hair. and i also agree with the vocal jam comment. can take it or leave it sometimes. depends on the mood i’m in, but i always listen to the 4/5/98 yem vocal jam. great stuff.
I have to go with the Pre-charge. Although it is a very tough decision, I have to go with the pre for the fact that, like someone above said, it is simply the most wonderful piece of composed music these ears have ever heard. I do tend to put on the Junta version when I want a nice crisp clean and flawless version of the pre-charge. It’s just amazing. On the other hand, the post-charge jams are part of what makes Phish so amazing. You can listen to 100 different versions, and none of them sound identical. Always changing, never staying stagnant with the jams. Then the vocal jams are (most of the time) tight. On the one foot, the actual charge…building to the b,m,g,s, never fails to give me goosebumps!
But I still have to give the vote to pre-charge.
JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM…and so on
BUILD UP… It always get you going, and makes you feel very HAPPY… I love the start… But to finish is the key…
Pre for me tho…
THe best part of YEm is how all of the different sections fit together well. I wouldn’s say on is necesarily better than the other.
Wash Uffitze! Love the jams. But the whole song makes me happy. I like almost every version of this song that I’ve heard.
gotta go with the composed section, it is truly a masterpiece of musical…ness.
“The Note” is my favorite along with Gordon’s bass solo @ the end! ![]()
