Obviously this is the quinessential phish song, it was played so many times, this may be the most interesting thread on the board when it gets going. The NYE 95 version gets me everytime with the vocal jam. Is it true that the first version had a guest violinist from a local burlington band or are they reffering to something else on phish.net??
i too really love the nye 95 version. it doesnt get enough credit imo, really well done composed section, a little funky jam, and one of my favorite vocal jams.
NYE 99…wow…
i always talk about this show but 1998-08-12 has one of the best YEM’s in my mind. pre-hiatus pharmers almanac lists it as top 15 all time and thats votes from the fans. ive never seen a bad one and was fortunate to see it as an opener twice (worcester 03 and shoreline 03). you know good things are to come when they start a show with YEM.
OHHHHHHHHH BOY!
so many great versions of this song. i think a great resource is charlie dirksen’s reviews of yem from phish.net heres the link
http://www.phish.net/reviews/yem/
he has reviews from 1986 all the way to Big Cypress. i have read several of them, and theyre all inciteful. sometimes i like to listen to a song and then read the review while im listening to it.
Man!
I’d like to know what everyone thinks is the best post-hiatus version of this song. For me it is Worcester '03 or Albany '03. I think Mike’s little funk jam at the end of these two versions are what make them the best. They played this song a lot so I’m just curious to know if I am missing out on some really extra-ordinary versions post-hiatus…
Haven’t heard Albany 03 but the Worcester YEM rocks!, Mike’s solo is awesome (though I especially like the way Trey bows out with the whammy pedal just as the solo starts - a really dynamic change) Certainly one of my favourite YEMs I have. Actually a great show all round perhaps my favourite post hiatus.
Just checked my library and I have nearly 6 hours of YEM. Imagine listening to them back to back.
How do you pronounce Worcester - I would say Wooster but that may just be an English thing - put me right.
I think you’ve pretty much got it 'zoid, with the exception that since it’s in mass. they pronounce the ending ‘ah’ or ‘eh’ or ‘uh’ instead of ‘er’
…although it’s pretty funny to hear americans from other parts of the country trying to pronounce it
GOD!

I would have to agree that Albany 03 is my favorite post hiatus YEM. Although there were plenty of noteable ones!
Shit…
^^^Is that chilli??? That stuff is stinkin’ up the whole thread bigb!
Ok, but does it seem to you like when Phish is playing a high profile or “big” gig (i.e new years eve, halloween, festivals, great venues) that yem just gets better?
^I def. think so.
As far as a complete yem, with tight playing and great communication…7.19.03 is THE best in my opinion. I’ve heard them all, and, as mentioned, there are some doozies, but 7.19.03 is truly mindblowing, in a simple way…much like the dwd jam from the previous night
listened to 11-9-98 last night nad there was a CRACKIN version of this little diddy to close the second set. It started off normal enough through the composed section, but really picked up steam in the ‘funk-ufizzi’ section…with Trey singing over his riffs a’la BC (but much more adventurous!)
