one of the most interesting versions of yem i think is 11-2-98. the pre page solo (nirvana) segment is almost 7 minutes long. just a really long, spacey, and cool jam. somewhat spooky. i tend to like those cool spacey jams, and i love listening to that yem for that reason. that and play played harpua and dark side right after
11-14-98 for a great “nirvana” section and 12-18-99 for the JAM!
I must shout out to my favorite YEM. 12/6/96. The “nirvana” segment is sweet and I love the idosyncratic way Trey misses the “Boy!” a little. But then, the jam. Dear God, the jam. It just does. Not. Stop. By the time Trey is hammering on his percussion rack, Fish and Mike have metamorphosized into flame-spewing, earth-shaking, Dark Lords of the Sith. It’s a total power jam that sounds like the Mothership landing in your backyard, all smoke and laser beams. And then a “donuts” vocal jam!
Always a find when in Chicago… A great YEM all the time… I hope they do not retire it, when they come back, but rather play it very few times…and rock it!
There’s a YEM from summer tour 98 that is like that. The ‘space’ part of it goes on forever. If I recall Vern was at that show and concurred with me that it was one of the few highlights of the show.
I particularly enjoy the NYE '95 version as well. Trey’s playing is very forceful and tight. The whole version rocks!
Phall '95 has my top two and three of my top 5 YEM’s ever. This is the third best of those IMO, which is saying a LOT. The 12/9/95 is my favorite ever, it never reaches the point that halloween 95 reaches in its first 20 minutes but the whole 34 minute thing is amazing. At one point they stop and trey starts it back up again with some amazing funk riffing before the vocal jam. My new list
- 7/9/97
- 12/31/95
- 5/5/93
- 10/31/95
- 12/9/95
Jesus, I just heard the beginning of the 1/3/03 “YEM.”
Brutal, simply brutal. Even after they restarted it there were still major flubs.
At least there was some enthusiasm in the BMGS section
Maybe the jam section will be better.
7/9/03 YEM -> Simple
8/6/88 YEM -> Cities
Great YEM’s with segues.
My favorite is 12/9/95. Also, 7/25/99 & 12/29/98 are underrated!
Deer Creek '99 has a fantastic YEM with a nice Boogie On jam after some sick funk by Michael “Soft G” Jordan.
^^TBH, I didn’t think that YEM was amazing, had a nice prenirvana segment, but the jam wasn’t exactly hose!
Is it ever possible to get tired of or hear a bad YEM?? Statistically it was their most played song, which makes me wonder what the longest string of shows they went without playing it.
1993-03-25 is quite amazing.
Mike is throwing some serious funky deep notes in there.
Then a CRRRRRAZY vocal jam, that ends with Fish rapping “Setting Sail”.
Quite amazing indeed.
I don’t think any YEM can hang with ANY '93 version.
There… It’s been said.
93 is an amazing year.
one of teh faves.
Whoa. Let’s take it easy and calm down, Will.

('93 is quite good in terms of “YEM” in my book, actually. but not the best year ever)
Tinley Park '93
one of the LivePhish releases. I got it for my brother as a christmas present about 4 or 5 years ago and i later sneaked away disc 3 for a while and it played in my car all week before i gave it back to him.
it was the first disc i ever got a hold of for myself and YEM was the first song.
i remember it as being incredible.
^
That is ANOTHER great example.
I love when they start singing “Mystery Achievement” by The Pretenders.
It took neck and myself an entire night to figure out what that was.
The earliest signs of the funk may be able to be found in the early YEMs.
anyone ever heard the 10.3.95 version?
Just heard it for the first time tonight and it is a head-scratcher. They completely fucked up the beginning, and then proceeded to play the most un-unified yems I’ve ever heard. At one point Page was completely tearing it up on the clav and organ and piano at the same time, but he sounded unusually disjointed with the rest of the band. The post-tramps jam was Page going off–>less than average Mike solo (this isn’t really a solo, but you know, the portion of most yems that features Mike)–>vocal jam.
Pretty horrible version imo.
But they all can’t be doozies.
Holy rusted metal, Batman!
Anyone heard the 12-29-97 version recently? Complete with “Can’t Turn You Loose” teases by Page.
WAAAY better than the 11-17-97 version. Not even in the same league.
No, I don’t think anyone has mentioned 1997-12-29 in a while.
