Your Fav. Show from Each Year?

i like all the love for the 1998-12-29 show. i feel its one of the 10 best 2 set shows theyve ever played. show me a better opening segue than rock and roll, funky bitch > pyite. solid first set split, great free second set opener, spacy 2001 > boogie on, fantastic yem with page really hitting stride and a divided sky encore.

as for neck thinking 1998-08-12 is sloppy…i wouldnt say its played to perfection but i would classify most of this show as being loose rather than sloppy. the yem is one of my all time favs and the ramble on melts right into slave perfectly. great mikes > simple too.

da funk! ;D

What am I missing with the first night of Vegas 00?? I’ve only listened to the nugs.net source of that once, but I don’t remember being too wowed about it. I remember the first set being rather standard, and although Fluff, Dinner and a Movie, Moma Dance, and 2001 were played early in the second set, I can’t imagine the Kid Rock portion bringing the show to that high a level. But, like I said, I’ve never heard it.

Some explanation from a and thelot on why they love this show would be much appreciated!

vegas 'oo is a top 5 attended show for me.
the ENERGY in that place was NUTS!
aside from the HUGE kickdowns of Spock’s & Dinner and a Movie, the band was ON all night.
people knock the Kid Rock appearance all the time.
personally, i dont like his music, but for phish to bring him out was dope.
it was cool that they finally said FUCK IT to bringing out other “jamband” guests.
Bringing out Bobby later in the week was cool, but the performance sucked.
Phil in '99 sucked.these are jamband GODS.
hell, even BB King sucked out the energy of NJ in 'o3.
phish were showing that they didnt have to be pigeon-holed anymore…that they can be universally accepted.
people say Jay-Z was a bad guest, too. i think he falls in the same category.
i never say this, but “you had to be there”.
a

august took the words right out of me mouth! ;D the energy in that place was freakin’ electric!!!

i think we did the same amount of shows that tour (you skipped albany & MN iirc and i skipped chicago & MN)…
after that show ended, i knew it wasnt gonna be topped.
as i was leaving, i told my buddy that that was the best show i saw since 8-1-98.i stated that as a fact.
they tried to keep it up the next night, but fell kinda short (although the set on paper is HOT!)
a

^^thanks guys. Sounds like a great time. I forgot about Spock’s Brain in that show.

I’ll definitely keep my eye out for a source of this show on etree.

did you make it over to the mandalay bay to catch les afterwards? what an incredible night of music!!! i don’t think i slept once! vegas + phish = heaven on earth

i feel like a wolfman’s is too slow and takes too long to develop to be an opener with energy.

this is a great opening segue and less than 2 months earlier too. though, after the peak of drowned it gets slow for a while.

a second song 2001 wouldnt do it for me especially after a rocking opener like funky bitch. i like 2001 in the second set when im ready to hear them lay back and just explore.

obviously, these are all personal preferences but i still like the 1998-12-29 openers the best…for now.

i have no idea what i did after the first night.
i was still rollin’ pretty hard when the show let out… :o
a

^so that’s why its your favorite!! ;D ;D

nah.
rolls dont affect how i judge shows.
i was eating 4 rolls a night on that tour and could give
a fair review of each of them.
i never really so far gone where i was too distracted to
understand what was going on musically.
a

4 rolls a night! JEBUS!

Is 9.14.00 one of your favs from that tour, or are you one of the people who hated that show, partly because of the rain.

That’s one of the first shows I ever heard so its special to me…that’s why I ask.

9-28-99 Set 1:
Wolfman’s Brother
Sneakin’ Sally

really good call on this one!

as for opening sequences how about 12/29/97 NICU > Golgi > Crossroads…I don’t even care that much for NICU or Golgi, but the combination of these three is just awesome.

2 to start the show and 2 at setbreak…

i like 9-14-00 a lot.
especially the first set.
its funny because that was the first time i was on the lawn for a pavilion/lawn venue ever…and i got soaked.
but, the 2nd set does meander a bunch, although i think that the 1st set more than makes up for it.
also, it was the the fifth show in a row without any repeats.
a

darion was a good time. i was lucky enough to be in the pavilion, so the rain didn’t bother me too much.

I only saw nine shows, so this isn’t too tough for me.

1997 - 11/16/97 - Denver - my first show. Unfortunately, I only went to the first night at McNichols, and didn’t know they were going to throw down a thunderous show the next night.

1998 - 8/1/98 - Alpine Valley - first outdoor show. epic. Opened w/ Ramble On, my fave song from my fave band in high school.

1999 - 10/1/99 Ames - only saw two shows (the other being 7/24/99), but I got to take several newbs to the Ames show…too much fun.

2000 - 8/7/00 - Alpine

2003 - 7/17/03 - KC

2004 - 6/25/04 - Alpine first night. I call this the “hard” night, and 6/26 the “easy” night.
