most definitely on the band. when you listen to this 11-17-70 live album it is just a trio: Elton on keys and vox, Dee Murray (HIGHLY UNDERRATED bass player), and Nigel on Drums. the sound is fantastic and Dee’s bass sounds SICK.
the burn down the mission>my baby left me>get back jam is SICK!!!
man i could talk about elton for days.
I’m basing this off of albums that I can listen to all the way through at any time and not hit fast forward to the next song.
Rolling Stones
there’s no way in hell that i could give you a top 5 favorite album list but i’ll throw 5 of my favorites out there:
in no order:
Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
Bad Religion - Stranger than Fiction
Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
Talking Heads - True Stories
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
[quote]
Blue Sky
Didn’t Duane sing on Blue Sky too? I always wonder who that is cuz it doesn’t sound like Greg.
my 5
the wall
abbey road
junta
garcia
moon safari (air)
dickey betts
in no particular order…
Thriller, MJ (go ahead and laugh. this album is spectacular. i wished i was black from the ages of 9-12. why? the funk)
Joshua Tree, U2 (undeniably one of the best albums of the 80’s…or of all time…ever.)
Boy, U2 (what can i say? they were my favorite band on earth for about a decade. this one still sounds fresh and new and powerful to this day. sure beats the hell out of whatever top 40 junk thier schlepping out these days)
Billy Breathes, Phish (pure transcendent beauty, front to back)
SOTGhost, Phish (the dark side of Billy Breathes. Blew my mind on the first listen. on the right kind of autumn night, it still does)
shit, that’s five.
i gotta throw in Cold Roses by Ryan Adams & the Cardinals. it truly is a masterpiece.
edit: AND Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. nasty album. breathtaking, though.
k. that’s all.
edit: GA! i won’t be able to sleep tonight if i don’t throw in Boys and Girls in America by the Hold Steady. this album is like crack mixed with heroin mixed with squeezy cheez and trisquits mixed with with grape drink. that’s how good it is.
so there’s my top 8 for now.
^ Nice to see recognition of Thriller, probably the single most innovative album of the 80s. Despite his behavioral issues, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones created one of the most important collection of music of the second half of the century. All of the current pop music is grounded in what these two men created in the early eighties.
EAT A PEACH: Allman Brothers…does not get any better
A LOVE SUPREME: John Coltrane…absolute perfection of 60s jazz
HARVEST: Neil Young…imo neil’s absolute best
AMERICAN BEAUTY: The Grateful Dead…Box of Rain is probably my favorite opening song on any album and my favorite Dead ballad
The 5th spot is a bit of a wild card but I’ll go with
A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON: Miles Davis…just awesome
Alice in Chains-Unplugged
Bruce Springsteen-Born to Run
The Grateful Dead-American Beauty
Young Jeezy-Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101
Guns ‘N’ Roses-Appetite for Destruction
I’m not sure on those, except for Thug Motivation & Unplugged. Unplugged blows me away every time, stellar.
Flaming Lips- Soft Bulletin
Beach Boys- Pet Sounds
Radiohead- The Bends
Phish- Junta
The Beatles- Abbey Road
I was wondering if anyone was going to put Pet Sounds on here.
Good call.
It’s always a tough call with me between the White Album and Abbey Road. I like both of them infinitely better than Sgt. Pepper’s, which is still a great album in its own right.
Alice in Chains’ Unplugged is good, but I always gave the nod to Nirvana for the better Unplugged? si?
Not for real, but for pretty close:
The Beatles
Junta
Power Windows
Close to the Edge
Wish You Were Here
somethin like that.
i couldnt put these albums in my top 5 but i listen to them at least once a month.
dr dre - the chronic
wu tang - enter the 36 chambers
notorious big - ready to die
snoop dogg - doggystyle
digable planets - reachin
^ Strange that you would include Copper Blue on your list, but make no mention of New Day Rising, Zen Arcade or Candy Apple Grey. You no like the Huskers?
EDIT
I don’t even know whose post this was referring to.
I just don’t think I can do this…but if I have to…
T-Rex - Tanx
Big Star - Radio City
Beatles - White Album
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
The Byrds - 5D
aaahhhh
Frank Zappa - Lather
Neil Young - Tonights the Night
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Replacements - Let it Be
…
damn…this isn’t even getting into it at all…
Phish-Story of the Ghost
Phish-Rift
Phish-Billy Breathes
Phish-Round Room
Phish-Farmhouse
